Why the poor "cheek weld" on Henry rifles

2559 Views 30 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  jambolt
I had the Marlin 39A (from 1967) and my recently refinished Gold Boy (no longer shiny) out for some fun today.

First: like every Henry I have personally shot, mine is devastatingly accurate. It IS as accurate as my 39A which is a tack driving "Tums Buster".

But, there is a catch.

From the shoulder, the Marlin wins easily as I can get a proper sight picture with it so I am much quicker on target and more reliable with "from the shoulder" fast hits.

The drop of the comb on the Henry is so drastic, I can just get a "chin weld" on it. I am very decent with it...but I am lighting with my Marlin.

What gives on this? How could Henry let this design even get out the door like that.

I have heard other people mention it and today, I finally got the chance to experience it. ( I have never had this issue with their full sized gun...that I can recall)

What are you guys doing to remedy this IF it affects you? I have found a couple of cheek riser cuffs and am thinking of ordering one but I would rather have a good stock.

Pic of the guns! ( of course! )

Just the Golden Boys and Silver Boys.
A peculiarity of Henry, the rest of rimfries are fine.

Yeah, been digging DEEP into this forum and I see what the deal is:

The Gold and Silver boy guns are essentially 1866 lookalikes. The other guns are more like traditional .22 lever guns.

Looks like I need a cuff.

Are you using the Tums as targets?
NECCO wafers also make great 'leave no trace' targets.

Interesting. How do you mount these for shooting at?
I tend to use DumDums as they come with their own handle. :)

Oooh. I like the Neco Wafers idea! Probably cheaper than Tums. Those were supposed to be the WalMart variety, by the way…but somehow the name brand ended up in the bag.

I routed a shallow groove in a 2"x6", kinda like a challenge coin stand.

I also do DumDums. The local Navy Exchange usually has the big pillows for dirt cheap.

I find they are great for feedback. My wife was terrible about breaking cheek weld or stance to follow the shot. Cheap, sugary targets broke that habit.

Dang, I have totally derailed this thread.

That makes sense.
Never thought to look for them at the exchange! I get mine from amazon.

Oh, Dum Dums, Neco Wafers and Tums don't count as a derail. those are FUN targets!

Got my cheek piece today (already!!!)...so much better now!

Well, the fix is in. I was goofing around on Amazon and foud this riser/cuff that had a review that said, "This thing is too darn high! You can't even get down to the sights with it on!!!"

I thought, "PERFECT!!!!" So, I ordered it.

It's nearly perfect. I need to sew on a little bit of a longer back loop so I can run it forward about one more inch. As it stands however, it is GREAT!

I have a Tourbon slip on cheek riser, for the money they're pretty nice, better quality leather than I expected. Used to have an el cheapo no name slip on riser and the foam pad collapsed pretty quickly, so far the Tourbon is still like new.

Have the exact same issue with my Silverboy. Contacted Henry, no help on a custom stock or stock maker.

Contacted AccuRiser, and installed on my rifle. The rise is easily adjusted as the rise is worked with a strong velcro, the comb is the loop and the sleeve is hook velcro. Here’s a few pics.
