I want to get a bull barrel for my 10/22 that I can shoot sub 1" groups at 50 yards, 0.5" would be nice, but I don't want to end up breaking the bank. I've read through the old posts and it seems people think pretty highly of the Green Mountain Barrels from Whiteface Mountain.

Any thoughts for or against a Green Mountain, SS fluted, in 16.5" (or maybe 20" not quite decided yet)? Any alternatives/better buys in that price category?

What's the deal with Bentz match chambers and "loaded round may not eject"? Does that mean if I chamber a round I'm gonna need to fire it, or dig it out carefully?

Do these barrels need to be "bedded" or can I drop it right in and use it (I guess bedding improves accuracy?).

What budget stock would you guys recommend. I've been looking at the Hogue Overmold and Butler Creek (to get my total cost of bbl and stock under $200). I'm a lefty, so thumbhold stock options seem limited.

Hope you can all pitch in to tackle this newbies questions!

Thanks,
Mitch

Unless you intend to build a flat out benchrest gun, the Green Mountain will be your best bet... and even in competitive benchrest, it can make a good showing. No two barrels will perform exactly alike, even within the same manufacturer/model.

Not ALL bullets will jamb, necessarily, but the bullets in a Bentz chamber will engrave into the rifling to a varying degree, depending on the shape of the ogive of the particular bullet in question. It's just part of the consequences of going to a precision type barrel.

Bedding almost invariably will tighten the groups more than you can shoot by not doing it. The results are dependent on how good a job you do, and how bad the fit was originally without it.

I am building a rifle on the GM 16 1/2". BBl. now. It should be finnished in a week, maybe a little longer.

I plan on shooting a lot of groups, and keeping a log of these groups. There will be several tests run as well. The tests will be used to evaulate two, possibly three scopes. As well as some ideas I've got. The action/bbl have been fired, but only for function.

I'm thinking about this too and

I have also just about decided on a GM barrel for my 10/22. Does anybody have any thoughts on the 18" barrel as opposed to the 16 or 20? GM has some pretty good prices on their website for either the 18 and 20" barrels at <$90!!

I probably won't do any competitive benchrest shooting but I do want to get a good combination if I change my mind.

I'm left-handed too and it does seem hard to find a leftie stock. I did a search on barrels and found Richard's Microfit website:

UW Mitch: They will make a leftie version for just a few bucks more in almost any of their stocks and set it up for a .920 barrel. There are some on sale right now in the $110 range.

Green Mountain

Just put together a GM 18" SS .920 barrel and a Blaster stock. So far the results are good but I still have some tweaking to go. I have not done any bolt work/headspace or any bedding at all. This is a work in progress. With that said here is a group that I shot the other day with CCI Green Tags. It was decent until a couple of flyers but that could have been me. They seem to perform the best out of the Match grade stuff. The Fed Lightnings perfom best representing the Cheap Bulk stuff. They seem to hold right at or under .5" for 10 shot group @ 50 yds. I have shot about 25 groups of the Fed and about 30 of the Green Tags so far and all are consistent. I like my barrel and I will buy another for my next project. Hope this helps ya.

Mitch, I'm another southpaw rifle shooter, and I have a Hogue OM stock. Great feeling stock, hard to beat for the money.
But I purchased one of the new Boyds SS stocks the first of the year, with there new barrel. Let me tell ya, that is a great little stock, southpaw or otherwise. My right handed friends like it, as well. The barrel is still almost new, just a few rounds, but I would buy another, from the indications it is showing with the first couple of mags.
By the way I like the GM barrels also, another hard to beat item from 2 of our sponsers. Ken at Whiteface Mountain is great to deal with.
As for Richards microfit. I have a camo thumbhole sporter. I have a lot of work to do on that stock, and I am looking forward to it. But if I had seen then, what I have seen now, I'd buy a Boyds, finished. One of there SS for all around, or the Blaster, more of an off hand if I understand right. It is available in a lefty, and rosewood laminate also. That would make a pretty stock. Look good with silver receiver and SS barrel. By the way I have more in a Richards unfinished than a new finished Blaster lefty would be.
From the Boyds Website, Part # Description Price
500-058 BLASTER RUGER 10/22 920 BC LH STK NL (F) $161.20
400-023 BLASTER RUGER 10/22 920 BC LH STK PL (F) $161.20
600-003 BLASTER RUGER 10/22 920 BC LH STK RW (F) $161.20
There site, http://www.boydboys.com/, check them out.
Oh yeah, email me at [email protected], and I'll reply with a picture of the SS stocked gun. Also of the Hogue and the unfinished Richards if you want. Andy
