The really useful thread that runs through all of these reply posts is: Look through more than one before you buy. Keep these in mind:

1. You get what you pay for, generally.
2. Your eyes are different, and probably better, than mine.
3. $150 scopes are NOT equal to $600. scopes. They may be very close, but they are NOT equal.
4. What is important to me may not be to you. I like mult-coated optics, "click" adjustments and AO, for example. Maybe you couldn't care less.

There are many fine values to be had; make a list of features you like and do your homework. Check your local gunshops and try a few of them, side by side. Buy the very best you can afford. Mount it in Burris Signature Zee rings, so when you want to trade up, it won't be all scarred up. Enjoy.

Bausch and Lomb 4200 6-24x40. This scope is incredibly clear. My best 100 yard group when the wind went down was just under half inch. I love it when you can see the tiny holes on the target at 100 yards.

the Hummer can shoot out to 350 yards, but the power left in the round is very low at this distance, and if any wind, etc. is present, I'd say it's very difficult to hit anything. At least for hunting purposes.

Of course you're not shooting at large game, but even so, 10x at 175 yards is plenty. Remember, perceived distance through the scope is only 17.5 yards. Why would anyone need 20 or 24x? Can anyone even hold the gun that steady away from a benchrest??

OldSwede is correct about optics: You get what you pay for. Higher end glass IS better, I don't care what anyone says, because the reality is 95% of you have never been in a position to compare at the range or hunting. In the store it's very hard to tell anything. When I put my S & B scope next to a comparable Leupold at the range, you really CAN see the difference. Better contrast, better color rendition, better sharpness, and better light gathering, among other features.

Good optics are a lifetime investment, and with your budget, you can get a lifetime purchase. Just be sure to spend it all.

I have a Burris Fulfield II 4.5/14 on my .17HMR. mounted in Burris Signature rings With the bullet drop compensator reticule. I love It! It simply gives me a hold-over advantage, when I'm shooting at unknown distances.

Or If I'm shooting at KNOWN distances, Oh well, squirels just quiver when hit, out to 200yds. inside 100 yds, head, shots
I think Burris is the best for the HMR with the BDC & mine is completely paralex free!



As far as I'm concerned, Leupold leaves something to be desired, especially in the parallex dpt.! & Ihave shot many Leupolds!

For the money, Go BURRIS, WITH THEIR SIGNATURE RINGS!

mrmarklin and I agree 100% - it is just that he is up a few notches on the scale than I am! I own mostly Leupolds - seven of them to be exact - because they are the best I can afford. I'm not sorry I bought any one of them - I WAS sorry that I bought several cheap scopes before I learned better. Those are long gone. One additional thing to add to mrmarklin's comment about "lifetime purchase" is: as you get older, your eyes will get WORSE, not better. It gets harder and harder to fight cheap optics. Do yourself a favor. Buy the best you can afford.

To answer the question about "who needs more than 10X?" - the answer is "me"! I need all the help I can get to see that egg at 200 yards! At 10X I couldn't see the chicken........

Ruger VMBZ with GM barrel and a Leupold V-II 6.5x20-40 (bought before the V-IIIs came out) on the factory rings.

Harris bipod too, which I swear by because there are no shooting benches & sandbags in the field. Even when I go to the range, I shoot mostly prone or sitting with the bipod. (Practicing with the bipod also forces me to concentrate much more on breathing control, trigger squeeze etc. than off the benchrest.) Practice, practice, practice!

I like the 6.5x setting at dusk/lower light conditions and the 20x for most everything else. Helps "Ole AT&T" reach out and touch something! Cheers, Lf

I have a Weaver KT-15 on my CZ and it works great(just enough power to see with).
I found out the other day that I can use the point of the duplex crosshair and its on at 150 yds and 1 1/2" low at 200
Thats better than holding over.

Scopes for .17hmr

Got a V-24 on the CZ Varmint and a Tasco WCP on the 77/17.The Ruger is my "knock around" gun.The scope has held up just fine.I got it in a gun trade,took it off the rifle it came with(22-250) and installed it on the Ruger.It doesn't compare to the quality of the Weaver though in my opinion.The elevation adjustment seems to be very repeatable though,not a bad choice for the money.If ya got the $400,buy the Weaver.With or without the dot.:t

I just bought a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 for mine (when it gets here) But have you looked at the Nikon Monarch? I have had a 5.5-16.5 for about a year on my 6mmBR and I think it is outstanding. Bright,crisp every bit as good as the top brands. I paid about $330.00.

Bulldog, Sorry, was away for a bit....The Legend's a nice scope and came along at the right time and price It has good glass and yes, Mil-dots on the reticle....Easy adjustments and hits where I want it to...... I've looked at the Elite, but not the other!

I have a Bushnell Scopechief on my Marlin 17VS. It is 6-20 power, but under normal field conditions its set on 10x anyway. Its the best scope I've had on a hunting rifle.

On my Marlin 17V...

I'm using a set of Burris Signature 22/Airgun rings with a Weaver Grand Slam 6-20X40 AO with the Varmint reticle.

On my 17 HMR CZ452 American/Varmint, I'm using Brookies' 3/8" dovetail-to-Weaver adapters with a set of Burris Signature Zee Rings and another Weaver GS like on the Marlin.

The Whistle Pig barreled 10/17 magnum has a Weaver V16, It is tempting to to go to my V24 for this gun or my 77/17 barreled one I am working on. Right now it has a Simmons 1048 44 mag on it.

BSA 8x32-50 AO, on 1517 MPR. not happy with grouping, found poor action bedding, will fix that and try again. the BSA is obviously not a Zeiss, will change that part of the equation next.

Thank you all for all of the great info, I thought I might get a few hits but I never thought I would get this amount of feedback to my post. Still not sure what I am going to go with but I am leaning towards the Leupold or the V-16. Still not sure what reticle the V-24 has. Some say it has a dot others say no dot. The one I looked at was very hard to tell either way. Keep the info coming.
