What scope do you have on your .17s?

I am trying to decide on a scope for my Ruger 77/17 VM/BBZ, I would like to keep it under $400. I have thought about the Weaver V-24 not sure I like the reticle, the V-16 is nice. I have also looked at the Leupold VX II 6-18x40. I plan on shooting paper and small fuzzy animals. Any thoughts would be great.

Just installed a VX-3 8.5-25x50 with the varmint hunters reticle on both my wife's and my Anschutz 1517's. Gotta be able to see the bullet all the way to the target.

Holy moly!! Those scopes are real behemoths. I have a 1517MPR and love it with my VX-3 3.5-10X. But, I have often wondered what it would be like with more power. Do you shoot prairie dogs or just targets?

Well, lets put it this way, I used to be a hunter until I married. Wife is a super animal lover. Now I shoot targets and other items and try to make the smallest group possible. But when I did hunt, I always did everything I could to always make a head shot. I did not feel ethical if I could not put them down absolutely instantly. Though I have I admit it sometimes did not work out the way I wanted. I still did the best that I could. I would rather have too much power then not enough.

I also plan on shooting my own hardened steel silhouettes and the higher power is so much nicer to shoot the little tiny steel animals.
What ever you choose. DON'T buy it from Amazon.

I bought a Nikon Monarch from them. Not cheap. The whole ordeal was a nightmare.

Back on topic.... The scope is OK, but only just. Not as good as an earlier Nikon Monarch that I have on another gun.
Moedum1 that Burris mini on the T-bolt is a real beauty! To bad Burris dropped that scope. Im a definite fan of gloss scopes. Beautiful:bthumb:
ncjones, I also have a Buckmaster 4.5-14x40SF on order, but with the BDC ret.
I don't do many longer shots, 100yds max most of the time, but I found the reticle also useful for close up shots(like varmints in the barn). Aim with the first dot below the 100yd zero and it compensates for the 1 1/2" difference between the "line of sight" and the bore. Works for me, and the 4-12x50 buckmaster I have on my 22-250 is clearer and sharper than my eyes can see.
What is with everyone shooting such high magnification scopes on 17s I see no need to go higher than a 9 power for my purposes. I could understand a 12 but higher than that just seems a waste. I have been looking at a Nikon monarch 2-8x32 for mine. The clarity and FOV are priorities for me. Should be nice'n light too.

I have trouble seeing those teeny holes on plain white paper targets. I don't shoot targets a lot, just checking zero from time to time once I get a rifle shootin good.
And, like it's been said, "Old eyes and vision that ain't what it used to be...
Merry Christmas, and good shootin to ya. Gary

The key phrase is "my purposes." It doesn't really have much to do with young eyes or old eyes correct to near 20/20, you just can't see something small and far away with 9x. And, welcome to RFC.
I put a Nikon ProStaff 5, 4-18x42, side focus, 1" tube, Nikoplex(duplex) and love it!

Very good choices so far.
I would have no problem with either of these scopes. Both on sale at Natchez SS

Weaver V24 with Ballistic-X reticle is currently on sale (as of Jan 2015) for $259!

Weaver V16 with fine crosshair for only $209

Can't beat that with a stick :D
Natchez also has the nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40 BDC SF for $199. Mine works great for target or hunt on my XT17 remlin. Slightly longer eye relief than the weavers.
On my rifle

On my tack driving CZ 455 I have a Leupold VX2 3-9X which is perfect for me since a more powerful scope does not provide enough eye relief for me.
Leupold VX2 6-18x40AO on my CZ 455. If I was buying something today, the link 2 posts above to the V-16 fine crosshair would fit the bill. $209 can't be beat on that. Grab that while you can.
