I am trying to decide on a scope for my Ruger 77/17 VM/BBZ, I would like to keep it under $400. I have thought about the Weaver V-24 not sure I like the reticle, the V-16 is nice. I have also looked at the Leupold VX II 6-18x40. I plan on shooting paper and small fuzzy animals. Any thoughts would be great.

It is a little higher than your set price, but I put a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14X50 AO on my 77/17 VMBBZ. I would have been a little better off with a 40 objevtive bell instead of the 50. I had to put a shim under the scope and use longer screws in the rings. However it does sit as low as is possible with this combo.

I have the Leupold VX III 6.5x20 EFR on my Cooper. I think they're great scopes.

They aren't cheap but I'd recommend buying a used one if thats what you need to do to keep withing budget limitations.

Since Leupold offers the lifetime warranty I dont see any problem picking one up off ebay or someplace like that.

I have got a Weaver GS 6X20 fine/dot on my 77/17 works great, I have 2 V-16's, one on my SVT Kimber and one a Mini-14. Great scopes for the $$$$$$. I have used the GS and the V-16 on my 257 Weatherby with no probs. Check the eye relief on the weavers, it works for me but it's tricky for some shooters. Good luck to you.

How do you like the reticle on the V-24? Do you have any problems seeing the TINY little dot?

There is no dot, just a very thin duplex. It is excellent for target shooting, thinner the better for me. When hunting I usually have no trouble but I have good eyes and I hunt in a open field. If I was hunting squirrels in a forest it might be a little tougher to use but that is just a guess, haven't ever tried it. Overall I love the scope, I highly recommend it.

Good scope for $200. I was on a budget. Accurate and repeatable windage and elevation. Only 15 power. May be a disadvantage for some.

What I have

is a Schmidt and Bender 2.5-10x56 scope on my Anschutz. It's way above your budget. What I would get if I were you is a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40.

This scope would be great for hunting, as many of your shots would probably at the lower end of the power spectrum. More power than this for hunting maybe would be needed for a centerfire gun. You have a rimfire whose outside range is maybe 175 yards. At 10x a target that is 175 yards away appears 17.5 yards away!! An easy shot, even if you had open sights.

For the money Leupold has it all: Fully multicoated lenses, ruggedness, good adjustment pots, a wide choice of reticles, good quality glass, and a lifetime guarantee. The model I quoted was only $30 over your budget. Go for it!!! You will never regret having good optics.

I agree with Bill A. unless you're shooting from a bench, higher powers are useless.

do you realize you won't be shooting at large game at 175 yards with a .17hmr. I would say a good 4.5-14 power scope would be perfect for the .17. When i go squirrel hunting with my .17 i do regret having a 6-24 power, but i like it for those longer shots at birds and gophers and what not.

Beg to differ. The hummer can be stretched (accurately) to more than double that distance.

BTW, that's a VERY nice piece of glass you have on your rifle.

Coyote, I double checked and I have no dot. Duplex is very fine. I got mine from Natchezss.com and that is the reticle it came with. There was only one V-24 to choose from. I would like to see first hand what the one with the dot looks like, have to keep my eyes open for someone else who has one.

Simmons Aetec 3.8-12X44AO. Look through one along side the Leupolds and the Weavers. You may save some money as you can get them for about $150 from riflescopes.com

Mine works well with BKL rings on my CZ American .17.
