What is a great value in a longer distance 22LR rifle?

4896 Views 56 Replies 36 Participants Last post by  MajorD
I scanned through the various forum zones and I’m not sure where to post this request, however, this one looks like a great candidate so I decided to ask for your assistance here. If there’s a more suitable area to post, let me know and I will move it there.
I’m asking for your experience to provide input into my decision - I decided to sell my Windham Vex/Varmint long range AR and use some of those funds to purchase a 22LR rifle capable of accuracy at longer 22 LR distances. At this time, I do not have plans to enter any long range PRS 22 LR competitions so I do not currently need an extreme set up, however, accuracy is always my quest so I am looking for a rifle that is a great value that shoots accurately at reasonably long distance. I have a semi auto 22 LR that is very very good, so I am leaning toward a bolt or other manual action for this purpose.
What do you guys recommend with a maximum price point of $500. Please do not laugh or chew me out for that and tell me I need to spend three times that much. This is a serious request and that’s why I’m asking for your experience with a firearm that is a good value. Thank you in advance for sharing your wisdom.

Tikka, Bergara, CZ, Ruger, and Savage bolt rifles all can do well at longer range with the right ammo and good technique.

My mid-price Savage Mark II has shot right about 1/2 MOA at 100 yards, as have many others, but each brand can have highs and lows.

If I wanted to replace my Savage, I would personally go with a Tikka or CZ.

I would not laugh or chew you out. That $500 is just right for a nice condition CZ452 someone is trading up from.

Check the NRL/PRS22 top gear lists in the "production" category, that should be the price range for rifles you're asking about. Any of the CZ 452/455/now 457s, Tikka T1x, Ruger, Bergara, etc. All are fine out of the box. Most can be dropped into chassis and the rest down the line if need be.

457 or T1X if you have no plans on upgrading. If you plan to upgrade save for longer and get a B14R.
Budget another $500 for optics.

A used cz. A Ruger precision rimfire, a Tikka. A used vortex diamondback 2 or Arken scope could be had for around 300$ with rings.

As mentioned in previous posts, there are many current brands with great barrels, triggers. Lots of fans of specific products. I would never presume to tell you what is best for you. My choice is bergara bmr or tikka tx1. I own both. Tikka is a bit more expensive to set up. I had to buy a rail, stock modules, stock spacers tx3 buttpad cheek riser, mags and of course a suitable optic(meopta meosport 3-15x50rd). Bergara bmr came with a 30moa rail and two mags. Had to put on a cheek riser and suitable optic( meopta optika 5x4-20x50RD) Much less expensive to start with the bergara. Like 750 all in one bergara about 1150 on tikka. Both shoot lights out for me with no trigger mods or replacements. It's all in what you need and WANT. Other brands are comparable I'm sure. You can replace stocks etc. sky is really the limit. And purchasing power. Not getting rid off mine, either one. Both are in 17hmr. Target is ammo testing, at 100y with tikka17hmr.

A number of good guns available. I definitely would say Tikka is a great gun as I have shot mine out to 400yds. It also fits In the large caliber stocks etc. if you want to upgrade later. All my friends that have bought Tikka rimfires also get super accuracy out of theirs. Definitely get a 20moa rail right away then a scope with a lot of adjustment and a reticle with good vertical elevation if you plan on shooting long distance.

I've a CZ 452 Lux that I took out to 625 in a competition. Its sitting in a Klinsky stock and had the triggered spring changed out. It can literally produce one hole with RWS R50, not all the time due to me and the wind but the rifle is deadly accurate.
The only reason I'd hold back on one is lack of chassis upgrades if that's the route one wanted to eventually go down. I've a B14R and the old CZ gives up nothing in the accuracy department. In fact if I had to bet the farm on my next 5 shot group I'd probably use the CZ.

1/2 MOA has piqued my interest, a Savage is now on my research list. I am fairly familiar with the CZ 45X rifles. Iam researching Tikka, Bergara and Ruger because I am not familiar with them.

Very good advice to read the top gear lists, thank you.

My savage mk2 btvss is a very good platform out of the box. Was 450.00 or so out the door from old gander mountain. They soaked me but I wanted it years ago. Currently wearing a Mueller 4-14 apv in silver, of course. 1/2 " at 100y it has never done. My experience is any rimfire that can shoot 1/2" at 100y consistently is amazing. Regardless good starter gun and possibly finishing gun. Many great choices, enough to drive one mad.

A Tikka out to 400 and a 452 out to 625, well done. Getting a 20 MOA rail makes complete sense. I have two good Vortex scopes to mount so that helps quite a bit.

Beautiful rifle. 😊. I am looking it up. And very nice group.
Honestly any of the handful suggested so far should be shooting within a MOA. For example, Tikka guarantees 1 MOA or better for rimfire at 50 and centerfire at 100 and all the firearms are individually tested before going out the door. I'd assume other companies have similar guarantees.
I really wasn't doubting just is very very good results. That is a sweet looking rifle. Mean business like look!(y)

Thanks. Very basic, but gets the job done.

I didn't think you were doubting, but I didn't want to toss that out without giving any proof.

I always say Savages are like pickup trucks - they will get the job done, but without a lot of finesse.

Tikkas (and a few others) are like sports cars - much more refined and precise.

Some people don't mind things being a little rough around the edges, but others prefer refinement and precision.
