For hunting zero at 50, and you'll be good down to 15. If rings are real high ymmv.

Zero at the distance you most commonly shoot.with the ammo you most commonly shoot.

If you want to get more complicated you need to know height over bore. Then you look at trajectories and figure out a nice range and use as the center as a distance to zero at.

Another is to zero at a range you can conveniently check zero at.

25 & 50 makes good sense for most of us.

.22 trajectory is pretty flat out to 50yds - I zero at 50 and then DOPE for 75 and 100, For going out to 200 yards that's a dedicated rifle zeroed at 200 given the 25 MOA or so drop.

SO TOTALLY depends upon what you are wanting to do with it.

I shoot subs for competition and I zero @ 25 yards for a variety of reasons.
Number one is that there is about a .3 Mils difference between 25 and 50, which to me is significant.
Number two is because if I'm zeroing I'm also doing load development and choosing lots of ammo that give me the tightest groups.
Number three is that I want to dope the rifle and put the data into a balistic calculator on the bullet's rising trajectory rather than after it reaches apogee. This is, of course, dependent on scope height, but I'm not hunting or shooting UKD targets, so I'm not trying to get the focal point as close to the center of the barrel as possible, because I'll be dialing for targets and known distances.

My dope at 200 out of a 16" barrel is 6.6 Mils (22moa) shooting TenX (subs). Shooting super sonic ammo it would be more like 4 mils or half of that. With Velocitors or other fast SS ammo I'm thinking like 3 mils. For reverence I'm at 13.6 mils (46 MOA) @ 300 yds, and 27.6 (94 MOA) @ 400 yards. My scope winds out about there, which is also the top distance in an NRL .22 match.

Different strokes for different folks.

I bought a Bergara, and just want to shoot as accurately as possible, NOT going to do competition. Hope that helps.

I shoot everything, except pistol, at 100 yards, so all my rifles are zeroed there.

Then zero at the distance you shoot at. It's pretty simple.

For Steel Challenge and Rimfire Challenge 30 yards.

For ARA, NRL22, PRS22 I zero at 50 yards and dial or use holdover for longer distances. Know your DOPE and you can dial or elevate past that.

good luck!
Another vote for 50. For my dedicated bench rest rifle I'm good at 100

The rifle I use for paper-target matches is zeroed for 50 yards. It's used for a match that runs 25 yards, 50 yards, 75 yards, 100 yards. So, since the 25 and 50 yard zeroes are quite nearly the same, there's only two significant dialings needed -- one for the switch to 75 yards and another for the switch to 100. I shoot those matches with a second focal plane, crosshairs only scope and dial to my settings for each stage.
For a 3-distance steel match that I shoot (approx 100, 150 and 200), I zero at the 100, then use my hashes (first focal plane scope) for targets at the other two.
Bottom line, zero for what you commonly use and from where you feel most comfortable making your adjustments.

I'm a hunter; for subsonic ammunition of around 1,060 fps I zero at 50 yards; for high velocity ammunition of around 1250 fps I zero for 60 to 65 yards depending upon the bullet weight. I check trajectory with various zeroes on ballistics calculators to get what I think will be the best setting for the ammunition used and purpose.

I tune all my 22 rifles irons or scope at 40yd my optimum squirrel range. My field revolver and pistols are 40yd too. Target 50’.
