I know the conventional wisdom is that the winchester rim fire cartridge is obsolete, but I am not convinced. Consider, the 50-grain loadings of the 22 magnum are awfully close to the older round ballistically. Also, the bullet design of the wrf seems particularly well suited to taking small edible game due to the very large meplat on the bullet, the 45-grain weight of the bullet, and the moderate velocity.
Has anyone experimented with the round in modern 22 magnum weapons? Has anyone chronographed modern wrf ammo, done accuracy testing, or shot any critters with it? I plan to do all of the above soon and am wondering what others have found so I can know what to expect. Just something I think will be interesting. Regards. Lawboy.

The original loading was 1150 fps, which made a good squirrel load. A high speed load was introduced (1450 fps) that was much more effective.

My Grandfather had an Winchester 1890 in WRF that he used for over 50 years. I often wonder how many squirrels he killed with that rifle.

A good small game (not destructive) load would be an excellent addition to the .22 Magnum line, but most folks choose a LR for that task. Personally I would welcome such a load (45 grain @ 1450 fps in a Magnum case). Perhaps an idea whose time has come due.

As far as accuracy, I have not shot any WRF in quite a while. The last I did shoot was not particularly great, if my memory serves me. With the low volume of manufacturing, I would doubt that the WRF ammo would be as accurate as good WRM ammo. And most of the writers of the thirties (when the cartridge was still very popular) did not think the WRF was as accurate as the LR.

The shorter case length (1.350" for the WMR vs. 1.170" for the WRF) might be a problem if shot a lot, but some judicious cleaning would remedy that. The original .22 Magnum case was a bit smaller at the head and in the body (.004" and .005" respectively), doubtful that would be of any consequence.

Winchester is coming out with a 22WMR Dynapoint . Its a plated (not jacketed) 45gr. bullet doing about 1550 fps. No one has seen any yet but it looks like it might perform similar to the old WRF. I am hoping to get a few boxes before this falls squirrel season. Hopefully they will be in stores soon.

I just picked up my nearly new early 9422M (F202xx) day before yesterday - bought on gunbroker.com and went by WalMart and bought 2 boxes of the Winchester 45 gr Dynapoints. This is my first .22 Mag and I just bought the cheapest ones Wally had for sale. Taking the rifle to the range this evening for its first test run.

The .22WRF is a safe alternative in the .22WMR chambered rifle.

BigMike was the first one to fill in us "clueless" types and I've just recently seen the same thing in the NRA's "American Rifleman" magazine.

As far as the new "Dyna-Point Magnums" there have been reports, from several of us, that aren't too thrilled with their performance.

I've never experianced "first round flyers" with my magnum rifles, until, I tried this round!! AND! the group was more like a shot gun pattern!(1.25")[email protected]! Forget trying to hit anything at 100yds!
