Does anyone know of a comprehensive table of muzzle velocity for various barrel lenghts, specifically for the Remington Premier or Winchester Supreme?

A comparison I saw for the .17 HMR showed the optimum length to be pretty short. I think it was about 18.5 inches. Some of the ultra accurate .22 LR also seem to have short barrels.

It seems a shame to lug around more barrel then you actually need to attain maximum velocity and (probably) best accuracy. I'm sure there is a lot more to it then just maximum velocity but I can't imagine the bullet is attaining any more stability if it actually slows down in the last couple of inches of a too long barrel.

Most if not all rimfire ammuntion is designed to burn all the powder in 16" of barrel length. That's why you don't find big velocity differences in rimfire barrel lengths between 16-24".

It's 18" for the MAAGGNNUUMM.

Any shorter and you're wasting the .22WMR's potential.

He's told several people that when they were looking for 16" barrels for thier rifles.

I found this article. The chart seems to say that 16" and 24" is the best length but then they suggest 20" I dont understand. It also states that 16" is the minimum legal length.

Well,

That kinda makes sense.....

Minimum == 18"
Maximum == 24"

"Happy Middle" == 20"

I personally know someone who is very "blessed" to have had the opportunity and resources to have been able to actually "chop" his barrels down, inch-by-inch and take "chrono" readings.

Ya can't argue with that kind of "evidence".

Yes but did you notice on the velocity charts that the "sweet spot" velocity changes for different ammo and there is 2 different spots. The first "sweet spot is around 15"-16" then again at 24". Its like the bullet slows down then speeds back up again at 24". But this only applies to the .22lr ammo listed. If I am reading this correctly. I wish I could find a similar chart for .22 magnum speed ammo.

Don't know if it will help any, my magnum is a boltgun and uses a 21" barrel. After things thaw out a little I'll find my cronograph and see what some different stuff does over it. Maybe we can get some other folks to do the same and gets some rough comparisions going.

Barrel length

There are other considerations for barrel length besides velocity. Balance and shootability is a personal choice, but I have always favored a slightly muzzle heavy rifle since it helps my offhand shooting. After saying that the new CZ Varmint that I just bought has a 21" tube on her. It's in the new 22 mag improved - (17)

Somewhere buried in the .22LR Ammunition Forum are a few threads relating to velocities and such of the WMR.

That was before we had our own MAAGGNNUUMM Ammo Forum.

We had a few guys that did the "chrono" thing for us.

If you guys are interested, ya can try a "search".

I already did a search of this Forum and we don't go that far back enough, so I'm sure they're in the LR section.

IIRC, some of the ammo was alot faster than "advertized", like the "TNT" & "Premier". SAAMI uses a 24" barrel for their "standards".

I know the "LR guys" are more concerned with velocities and the effect of that "super-to-sub" sonic bullet wobble.

Hell, our ammo looks "super-sonic"....still loaded in the magazine!

velocity data

I found the .22 WMR velocity data in the .22 LR forum and I've started a spreadsheet. The only barrel was 24" in a Ruger 77/22. I'm most interested in the hot cartridges, the Remington Premier, Winchester Supreme, CCI MaxiMag and the Federal Speer, so that is the data I've entered.

If any other velocity data shows up for other barrel lenghts, I'll add it to the spreadsheet and post it on the forum when enough data shows up to be usefull.

I think there are standard .22 WMR barrels of 18.5, 20, 21 and 24 inches. I have the 24 and if I get the 18.5 and 21, I should be able to extrapolate others.

If any pistol data shows up, that would be a bonus. I have .22 WMR Taurus Tracker with a 6.5 inch barrel. Only one range session so far and it is out for trigger work. The standard set up is about 8lbs. , single action! Just not good, at all.

I am currently in the process of doing some comparing myself. I have chrono'd several different loads thru a factory 20" 597 barrel - TnT's, Premier's, Maxi-Mags. I will be comparing velocities to a Volquartsen 16.5 carbon fiber. Hopefully I will have a stock made soon so i will be able to finish the testing this spring.

Ammo & Ballistics by Bob Forker has about a page and a half of data for the common factory loadings but they were all done with a 24" 16 inch per rotation pressure barrel. If we want that kind of data I think we're going to have to dig out the chronys and hacksaws. Chipmonk from Rogue Rifle is advertised as 16.125" barrel. If you want to make a project out of this I'm betting that every kid in the neighborhood with a .22 mag would love to have it chronographed with different ammo and you wouldn't really have to do a statistical spread of five three shot groups like the magazines do. Forker lists 12 different loads and data from a 24" barrel just to start.

I think what we're not looking at here is that hot gas continues to expand in the chamber and bore long after the bullet has left. That's what makes it go bang. Just as the powder is still burning and making gas after the bullet has left the chamber, those gasses are still expanding and accelerating the bullet long after the last powder is burned. I read somewhere, think it was Bob Forker, that it takes something like forty feet of barrel before it starts to actually slow the bullet. Where bore friction starts to overcome the acceleration imparted by expanding gas. I think he was talking center fire there so it may be quite a bit shorter for rimfire but it makes sense. Look at pistol barrels, even the long ones by TC. I'd say the longer the barrel the higher the velocity in anything you can hold up but we have to stop somewhere. Even in centerfire most pressure barrels for advertising don't exceed 26".

I won't be rud but my first response is NO WAY. Shot gun barrel shoot faster at shorter lengths. The reason why people like me who compete shoot longer barrels is not velocity, but rather sight plane and weight for follow through. The results were just posted for the new 17 HMR and they started with what I believe was a 24" barrel and cut off one inch at a time and recorded the chronograph readings from each barrel length. The highest velocity was from the 19" to 17" range. Benchrest boys that shoot centerfire 1000 yard matches tend to shoot short, fat, thick barrels. I believe I read that after 16" of barrel length in a 22 rimfire that the bullet starts to slow down. These types of testing might not seem intuitive, but test after test confirms this to be true. One more thing: the big bang that most people hear is not only the actual powder burning but rather the bullet breaking the sound barrier adds greatly to the noise. Come back with some specific test results, but I would welcome others to comment.
