I knew that S&W had discontinued the M647, but I am surprised to learn that there are no service parts. I had an M647 that exhibited the same issue after barrel heating, and I replaced it with a PC M647-1 that seems to be rock solid.

I wonder if S&W learned something about the M647 that drove the decision to offer a different model as a replacement.

I also am waiting for the M647-2 chambered in .17 Hornady Mach 2.

Maybe I am lucky. I have a 647 in 17 hmr 8 3/8 it shoots allday with none of the above listed problems. Hope things work out

If a gun has been produced, someone out there will have a way to fix it. I would not be too concerned if Smith stops the production of the 647. My 647 was sent back to Smith twice to get the bugs out and it is now a real joy to shoot.

My favorite thing to do is bust clay birds at 200 yards. Can't do that on windy days, but it does make me smile.

Well at least they were willing to send you a new gun. I know , I know - the one you bought originally should have worked properly to begin with. Still , let us know how the 648 22 mag shoots.

results of the smith 648

I placed a Leopald red dot on the smith 648 and was using CCI .22 mag shells.
At 25 yards I hit about 1/2" groups using a gun rest. Not too bad. I fired nearly 65 rounds through it and had the same results with no malfunctions and any mechanical problems. When I get the chance to fire it at 50 yards, I will let you know how it goes.

So far so good. I've not shot it much, but I've definitely gotten the barrel hot and there was no problem. Have a Hakko on it and it's like a short barrelled rifle.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I hope they offer me a replacement as well. Mine will not group better than 3 inches at 25 yards. I think I will get a 617 instead of the 648 though. I am tired of expensive rimfire ammo that is not reloadable.
