Tippmann 22lr Problem

3351 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Barry black
Hi to all. I have one that I put about 500 rounds through with no issues until now. I went to the range today and now the bolt won’t lock back at all on the last shot. Any of you guys have this problem? It does it on all 3 mags I have. The gun is super clean when I start shooting it.
Thanks
Mike

I just checked mine and they Lock back so you may have a mag issue or maybe cleaning might help.
So... the mag follower is either binding on something internally and not letting the bolt catch pop up and cause the bolt to lock back... OR there has got to be some type of debris stuck in the bolt catch mechanism binding the catch and not allowing it to flip up when the mag is emptied...
Its very easy to test this... pop your receiver halves open and then run a mag test and bolt catch test...
See if the mag follower pushes the bolt catch up and stays up...

I have over 20 of these mags and have had NO function issues with any of them...

Thanks I’ll give that a try. I doubt it’s a mag problem because it does it with all three mags and they’re brand new.
I had something similar. Tippmann suggested a little sanding of the bolt catch but it didn’t really seem like the issue and didn’t help.
Like someone else said, try to see if the bolt catch is being pushed up by the mag. Mine was bit just didn’t seem quick enough in firing. I cleaned the mag body and followers (it was multiple mags, also), so make sure that’s not an issue.
It finally seemed to me like the rear of the follower just wasn’t catching up quickly enough to catch the bolt as there was no problem when pulling it back manually. I took the mags apart again and figured I’d try turning the spring around so the elevated leg favored the rear of the follower. That seemed to take care of it in all mags and caused no other issue.
…and it just started doing it again. Only with a couple of 25’round mags. The 10 rounder works fine. I have been stepping out and doing a little more shooting lately this winter. Just a few mags at a time. I usually wipe off the bolt and brush out the loose grit and get a little more detailed as things build ip a bit more. It just kind of adds up in some of the less accessible areas.
I tried cleaning up the mags again with no effect. The bolt catch was feeling a bit gritty, though and I finally took it apart completely along with the rest of the trigger/hammer assy. There was quite a bit of gunk building up in the corners of the cutouts and very little oil getting in will quickly turn that into a gummy mess.
After that it worked fine again.
Dry lube is your best friend when it comes to filthy 22 rounds..Liquid oil equals instant gunk buildup..

Since shooting more 22 lately I’ve become much more particular about what gets actively lubed or even cleaned regularly with solvent. Of course there are places where a little bit of solvent creep becomes inevitable, but for the most part I’ve been just dry brushing areas that don’t need anything further between more significant cleanings.
It’s been difficult to convince myself of that. When I was a kid we just didn’t shoot recreationally. Guns were brought out for hunting season or to dispatch the occasional pest or what not. They were kept in the corner of a closet somewhere and I was always taught to clean and oil thoroughly before putting it away. They never really got used hard enough to get good and dirty.
Now things are in a locker or safe and I pay more attention to humidity control there than anywhere else. I also shoot more frequently than we ever would have back then. Kind of a shame considering what we had for acreage. Different times!
