Thinking about buying a M1100 17HMR

I'm in the market for a bolt action rifle in 17HMR. I've read everything I can on the M1100 but all reviews are for 22LR models. I'm looking at the M1100 with the walnut stock and I'll be using it mostly for small game hunting. The polygonal rifling has me intrigued. Some articles/forums say its more accurate, some say less. I'm willing to give it a shot considering the 1 MOA guarantee from Howa.

Does anyone have any experience?

Well, I went for it. 17HMR in the walnut stock. Ordered 9/9. $489 after taxes, etc. Paid by ACH so that adds a few days to the lead time.
Ordered the DIP 25MOA rail made for the Ruger American Rimfire. Vortex Diamondback 4-16 x 42 with Dead-Hold BDC.
First round of ammo to test: CCI 17gr. V-max, Federal 17gr. V-shock, Hornady 17gr. V-max, Hornady 20gr. XTP HP

I finally got some time with it. Took it apart to clean it. There are sleeves to pillar bed the receiver. There were some minor tool marks and the bolt could use a polish in some spots but nothing major. The bolt handle is striking the stock when it is locked so I will file away the wood to make clearance.

Mounted the scope on cheap rings and shot 10 rounds. The magazines weren’t seating completely until I worked them a handful of times. I had some case shaving during feeding so the throat of the barrel could use a polishing as well.

5 shots to zero then a 5 shot group from 65 yards. Federal 17gr. First three rounds were touching then the next two opened the group up to 1.5 inches. I only had a cheap front support and I was shooting prone on a slight slope from right to left. Not ideal and I’m not a good shooter by any means. I’ll update when I can shoot from the lead sled.

Nice looking gun......Show us some of those sub-MOA targets when you find the preferred ammo.
That's a nice-looking rifle, and I've heard good things about the Lithgow LA101 rifles. I'd like to try one. I hear that some Aussies complain about the weight compared to a CZ 452/455, but I have no problem with an 8 lb rifle.

I have two .17 HMRs, a CZ 452 American and a CZ 455 American (with barrels, mags, etc. for .17 HMR, .22 LR, and recently bought but not yet fitted/fired .17 HM2). I do like the idea of taking one rifle with two barrels when I travel, but I also like the idea of having one rifle for a specific caliber that's set up and ready to go.

I'll likely sell my CZ 452 American... I just don't shoot it very much. I'm strongly debating either selling my Lilja .17 HM2 CZ 455/457 barrel and instead getting an unfired repro Win 52B in the safe refitted with a .17 HM2 barrel. That way I can take three rifles with me... either the Rem 541S or Kimber 82SA in .22, the Win 52 in .17 HM2, and the CZ in .17 HMR... and have a rimfire ready for all purposes.

If I only had one rifle and wanted to change calibers fairly inexpensively, the CZ 455 or 457 are hard to beat. I've found that I maintain zero with barrel changes (different scope settings for each barrel, but repeatable).

I really like the wood stock on your rifle. I have 4 17hmr. Tikka, Anschutz 1717D, Bergara, Steyr z2. For varmints(groundhogs) really got hooked on the 17hmr. Once you find a round that your rifle likes, depending on what you're using it for, buy a case or two. My Anschutz likes 20g xtp. Steyr is still in ammo testing. Bergara likes 20g cci gamepoints the best. Tikka is seemingly indifferent to grains and brands. Bergara seems to like 20g xtp best speer 17g least. It's a process. Sorta a crap shoot as cci makes everything 17hmr except for winchester. They make a few different badged stuff luckily I have not bought more than a box or two of their stuff as it seems to be trick ammo. AKA shoots around corners....I have looked at the howa but never seen wood stock on one. Good luck with it, sure it'll be great!

I've owned six 17HMRs and still have 4; 3 Anschutz and 1 Bergara. Every rifle I kept is a shooter. two 1517MPRs and one 1517D and the Bergara B-14R. each one shoots a bit differently depending on ammo. None of them like the 20gr stuff as well as Hornady17gr V-Max. Let us know how your new toy shoots. The varmint killing capacity of the 17HMR is great and will eventually achieve legendary status.
