WELCOME TO THE WATERING HOLE

A stress-free place to gather and share whatever is on your mind! A fun place of mutual respect where you can hang your hat, vent, relax and shoot the bull for a while!

Happy Easter to all who celebrate that faith.

To all others, Happy Spring!

Easter symbolizes a new beginning, so it is fitting that TWH has a new beginning as well!
Along with RFC, TWH has been remodeled!

Actually, it can be anything you imagine it to be!

I am happy to announce that due to the increased bandwidth of the new RFC, there is no longer a need for the weekly closing and re-opening of TWH!!! After 10+ years of weekly "flipping" we now get to keep the doors open continuously! My sincere thanks to our moderators, especially Sophia, for making this possible!

I would also like to thank all the members who have kept this boat afloat for so long! We have become like family here, and now have a permanent residence! (y) While we have many long-time members who have been enjoying the company found in this amazing virtual bar, we also welcome all new folks. Jump right in! The first drink is always on the house and Veterans always have an open bar!
Al The Infidel (Tubby Slayer extraordinaire) is the bar manager.

So, let's get this re-opening celebration going! Set 'em up, Al! Drinks all around!!!

Spent the evening with Sabrina and her parents watching a play at a theater in a nearby town. Anne of Green Gables. They did a good job. The sound guys could have done better, as the volume was too low for older folks. Winding down a little before heading to bed.

Cell phone pic before the play started. No pics or videoing allowed once it did.

Man I am so sore it hurts to breath! Laid up today for recovery after yard work. Installed new spark plugs and air filters in the mowers, resharpened the blades and greased 'em up. Carried the left rear wheel off of the 2009 mower and had a tube put in the tire. Bought five gallons of gas and one of two cycle fuel. Mowed and trimmed my place and Mom's, including trimming a bunch off of some of her hollies with the Stihl hedgecutter attachment. Had to rake and haul off tons of grass clippings, leaves, downed tree limbs, etc. Ran three tanks of fuel through the KM91R motor and used up three spools full of trimmer line. If Mom's neighbors hadn't mowed her yard the first time while I was all stove up from the car crash last month it would have been an utter disaster. Both of the old Craftsman mowers are still running well, worn but what we have.

Hauled off the busted coffee table from our daughters house and while I was there fixed their mailbox and post. Somebody had bumped it, knocking the post off plumb, loosening the box platform and damaged the plastic hinge pin on one side. I brought my big heavy tamping bar, some galvanized 16d nails and some zip ties and fixed all that. They had some cardboard boxes that needed hauled off too, always ordering something from Amazon. Tossed all of those and the coffee table frame on my burning pile and burned them.

After all that massively overdoing things for a couple of days it caught up with me and I'm paying the price for it. I could stand some of those opiods that I'm no longer allowed.

Mornin',

47 and calm, sunny, windy a 70 for today.

Another groundhog down. Not sure if he was hiding or living in the front old shed, but after seeing him run in there, I set up and waited a bit. Photo in the varmint thread.

My ditching effort was mostly a success, just need some fine tuning. Few more odds and ends knocked out, few more on tap for today.

Have a great day.

Good Morning RFC'rs, et al:

I've a hundred .45 acp cartridge cases primed and ready to load in the progressive, (I prime off press). I think I'll geaux out and prime another hundred.
Ordered parts have shipped.

Geesh, . . . I'm going to kneed a knew holster?
6'H cedar privacy fence posts are only 2'D and the NE corner of the yard useta be swamp hence now a $$ leaning 8-9yr old fence towards the neighbor's garden. One could see the lean looking at the fence flat on 33yds away from the window. 5yrs ago? we dug out one side of the offending posts, pulled it straight and pounded metal fence posts down, screwed em to a couple of the cedar posts posts and filled in the gaps on the other sides of the posts with sand and pounded it in. As the water table is only 3'D in the spring on that corner of the 33ydx33yd yard the effort alas proved in vain.

2 weeks ago I hooked together a couple straps, including a cinch strap, to an eye bolt/screw on the post and tuther end around the biggest trunk of my 3 trunked apple tree and cinched it tight until I could hear the fence begin to protest while hoping wind action of the tree slightly swaying and the spring thaw would slowly work its magic. Today I cranked it guitar string tight while pulling the fence top 1.5" closer to 90º and the tree is showing no signs of splitting. 👍 Lawn cutter will have to duck the strap for a 1/2doz passes.
ETA~ pic of correcting the now strapped fence 'leaning the wrong way'. No political content intended.
The vertical green metal posts screwed to the cedar posts are 4'D and didn't keep the fence from leaning the wrong way again.

Did I miss the donuts?
Nuther dreary day with lots of rain last night. Flashes of light and roar of thunder accompanied the rain. Slept through it on the good ear. New ear drop prescription started yesterday afternoon. Difficult to watch through corner of eye to see the five drops drip in. Think my ear had smoke rolling out of it and smelt terrible.
Speaking of Smelt, sure could go for a bucket of Lake Superior Smelt. Foot long Smelt are caught regularly in Keweenaw Bay, L’Anse. Those would be great smoked as are Menominee. Whitefish smoked are just okay but the smaller Menominee and a sleeve of Ritz crackers and sharp cheddar are great traveling food.
Two days of warm enough weather to get the pups out to play. Breda sure is a great helper with the pups and loves her little brothers and sisters.

I stood in the middle of a group of penguins in the Falkland Islands in 2000, for Birds, they can be nasty.

How did they taste, fishy?

Friends useta can excellent tasting whitefish and menominees caught with single eggs in the Upper Harbor bubbler here. Friends are dead and the bubbler kaput with the lakeside eyesore power plant now torn down. Good riddance to the plant I was against because of the location albeit I caught a few tons of fish, literally, trolling around and thru the warmer water discharge pipe bubblers over the years. Don't see any guys tied up to the ore dock dead stick fishing with single eggs for menominees anymore either, lost art.
Tell me about this smelt and crackers and cheddar. Sounds good and very Norwegian.

My favorite stop on the way to bridge is Gustafson’s smoke house and party store. The smokers are always going and lots of native Great Lakes fish on display. They also have native Yooper Cheese to choose from. Haven’t found Menominee there in a few years but always have largish Whitefish in stock.

65°A already this morning. Weasels say high 70s, perhaps 80 today with the skis partly sunny or partly cloudy. Will service the mower today, but not sure if the back yard will get mowed. With the 120 points of rain we got yesterday and last night, half the yard is a pond of standing water, with the other half looking like a rice paddy.

Heat off windows open for freash air.

I live an exciting life.

Nice pups Lon.
G'morning, all. 69°, RH78%, wind S 15 G 28 under overcast skies. High is forecast to hit 85 and wind speed and gusts will both increase later. Will prolly ease out to the club late mid to late afternoon and take on the green '13' that was stumping me the other day, then see whot the scoreboard looks like for the Metropolitan skeet shoot. I'm thinking w/the winds any hunnerts will be very hard won. Last werd I had there were only 50 something entries. Pre-pandemic/Wuhan virus times and seemingly forever, it was always sold-out w/a queue wait-listed and hoping for a last-minute no-show. We can accommodate roughly 170 shooters w/our ten skeet fields. Times have changed. I'll probably shoot the Pan American that is coming up and in the state shoot that we are hosting this year, but that will also probably be the last time that I shoot any registered skeet and I'm on the fence doing even that. Will def. shoot the 'closed club' skeet shoot, but it may not be a registered shoot to keep the costs down for those members who are not 'card carrying' skeet shooters. Have been supporting NSSA & TSSA and shooting registered skeet casually since 1963. I'll still shoot it recreationally and, in the leagues, and in the non-registered club shoots the other side of Ft. Worth. Great game, and I still enjoy it, a lot but the costs have gone up considerable for registered targets in both skeet and sporty clays.

State shoot for sporty clays is next week at a site not far removed from the Ft. Worth club I belong to, Travis Mear's 'Defender' in Aledo. They are anticipating over 800 entries. I don't know the exact number of shooters pre-registered, but it will be a very large multi-day event. Forecast looks like the coming rains will be gone by the time they get started. Hope they get that break. I'm not shooting in it, but many shooting friends and acquaintances are signed up to do so. I've never shot there, finding the two clubs I belong to meeting all of my shotgun clay target needs these days. Sometimes I'll shoot at a nearby public facility as well when they are hosting an NSCA shoot or join some friends that routinely shoot sporty clays there early on Tuesday mornings.

I'll still travel to shoot birds or hunt but no longer have the interest doing that to shoot in competitions. Would rather take that money and just shoot more targets, keeping it fun-based. Of course, I'll still stick a toe in the water... for some games.

Just some lazy morning
reminisces over good coffee, and glad that I didn't have to be up early to go and shoot this gray and breezy morning. The bride's 'Baboon Bottom' hybrid iris opened yesterday. It's quite striking and also aptly named, and it makes her laugh every time she says its name. I should have snapped a pic ofvit yesterday when the light was better. May duit anyway before a rainstorm gets it. More rain's a coming, beginning this evening if ya listen to them weather weasels. A look outside makes it easy to believe. Time for more coffee and then to draw a hot tub and scrub off the week's crust w/some lye soap. It's all just a manner of speaking, Pard. These dayz ya can't get a hot bath for 2 bits [25¢] and ya can't get a haircut and shave for a dollar either. Room and board is a lot higher too. Outrageous, whot they want for a bag of oats down at the stable. I'm here to tell ya, it ain't what it used to be. Not by a longshot. Set 'er up again and lemme have a double this time, barkeep.
