WELCOME TO THE WATERING HOLE

A stress-free place to gather and share whatever is on your mind! A fun place of mutual respect where you can hang your hat, vent, relax and shoot the bull for a while!

Happy Easter to all who celebrate that faith.

To all others, Happy Spring!

Easter symbolizes a new beginning, so it is fitting that TWH has a new beginning as well!
Along with RFC, TWH has been remodeled!

Actually, it can be anything you imagine it to be!

I am happy to announce that due to the increased bandwidth of the new RFC, there is no longer a need for the weekly closing and re-opening of TWH!!! After 10+ years of weekly "flipping" we now get to keep the doors open continuously! My sincere thanks to our moderators, especially Sophia, for making this possible!

I would also like to thank all the members who have kept this boat afloat for so long! We have become like family here, and now have a permanent residence! (y) While we have many long-time members who have been enjoying the company found in this amazing virtual bar, we also welcome all new folks. Jump right in! The first drink is always on the house and Veterans always have an open bar!
Al The Infidel (Tubby Slayer extraordinaire) is the bar manager.

So, let's get this re-opening celebration going! Set 'em up, Al! Drinks all around!!!

Kolbalt battery powered lawn mower arrived today, all unwrapped and ready to go. 😀

Lots of snow for both Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park tomorrow, Don. ❄
I'm looking at diesel heaters for the truck right now.

Kinda, but with three bicycle wheels and a much higher center of gravity.
I have the Schwinn tricycle I bought for my Mother so many years ago.
I used to ride it, a bit.
I thought about putting a battery, solar panel, charge controller and an electric motor on it.

Hey everyone!

Had a nice night out for dinner with galpal. Home now so should get just enough sleep so as to not be miserable tomorrow. The garage door guy came today and replaced the jackshaft motor that he installed 3 weeks ago with one that is working properly. Overall a great day! (y)

Sleep well y'all!!!

Welcome to The Wareing Hole, KP! Glad to have your company. What age kiddo's are you shooting with?

Hope you get your stock issue dealt with quickly & to your satisfaction. The advise on pillar bedding you've received is very sound. Should you get the stock replaced, I would immediately go in that direction, inclusive of the mentioned epoxy; it will pay dividends, long term, in both accuracy and the stock's life expectancy.

Bride told me that she'd seen the first hummer of the season day before yesterday. I've not seen one yet. We should put a feeder out for them this year. Never got around tuit last year but still had plenty of them about, in the back. I'm sure they were in the front too but I never made that observation. Did see a hummingbird moth in the front twice last summer.
--

We B weeded out or izzit we've out weeded ourselves(?)... as in worn out from weeding. Two large contractor's bags worth that I could barely manage. Hands have had it for the day and remain flexible tho grip strength isn't back to where it was some months prior and I still have some on-going numbness in the rt. thumb & first two fangers. I could grumble about it, but to whot end? Think I'll just fix a nice stout highball and be thankful that I/we could do whot we've done today and not worry about it. Purple sage/rain bushes in the courtyard are telling me the weasels forecast for rain is very iffy. They have no blooms and have mostly leaved/leafed out. I'm not going to worry about that either, taking a Kierkegaardian view on the matter; it either will or it won't.
--

I've placed an order for another few hunnert pounds of shot, locking in an already high price but can see it much higher in many places... and if things don't improve soon [I'm hesitant to say they will], it will have proved a sound decision. With my interests where they are, I look at adequate supplies of components like some might bars of
bullion. We keep cubes of beef, yard bird and t'mater bullion on hand... in jars clearly labeled. The lead shot is costing me more than they did. Life; live it... and grin! 😎
11, 8, and 6. The 11 year old isn't in to it as much as the younger two. I'm not allowed to go to the range without them. Lol. Is it easy to do pillar bedding yourself or better left to a Smith? Built a bunch of. AR's but I've never really gotten into bolt guns too much.

Have a great day all!

Hey everyone! New guy here. Bought a T/C .22 for my kids to plink with last summer and they fell in love with shooting. So between that and 22 ammo being about the only thing I can reliably find locally, I'm starting to go down a rimfire rabbit hole. Lol.
Welcome! I am sure you will find several of us along the way down that rabbit hole!

Mornin',

43 and a breeze, sunny and 60 today with some breeze.

We have had reports of hummers around, but none at our feeder just yet. We only see one or two a year, but that is enough to thrill the wife. Seeing a charm like @Sophia has would call for a large celebration.

Meetings went on as expected. Necessary evil is the only way to describe them.

Shrimp tacos last night. Back to ham tonight.

Have a great day.

After a four or five month wait to see an audiologist and ENT Dr the day has finally come. Had several bouts of ear infections throughout the last year. A week of answering texts enter 1) to confirm the appointment the called to confirm yesterday afternoon. Good grief, what we have here is failure to communicate.
While the pork shoulder roast was slow cooking in the Dutch oven for four hours son and I rode three sections of MTB trail. Way too much ice cream and lack of excercise this long winter. I had buzzards circling close after one particularly difficult climbing section. A few too many layers of supposedly breathable polypropylene with a goretex parka on top and found myself cooking within. Middle layer was drenched and trapped all the sweat upon returning home. Next time it will be a light merino sweater with the wicking T shirt against skin. Good test of what to wear and lesson learned on a forty degree afternoon with a brisk wind. Little sore but shoulders and back pain much improved after a good jostling.

Have a great day!

Speaking of hummers, I saw a civilian hummer for the first time in years in a parking lot last week. I'd've owned one if it would've fit in my garage with the Finn's buggy @ the same time. I'm serious!
Drat, knew I'd forget sumpin... forgot to remove the Nam vet license plate off the old truck hence a 36mi round return trip today. On the brighter side even at my sharpest I always forgot something.

Luck with the ear Lon. It made me think of the torture my baby bro went thru before becoming stone deaf in his one ear.

up 5º to 30˚ already.... heatwave!
Breakfast eaten. Been watching the parent blues bringing breakfast to the kids. Phoebe has been at the window watching with whiskers quivering and making chattering sounds. Cute when she stands up next to the window and looks like she is trying to dig her way through it.

Off to work. Y’all have a great day!!!

38 spring like degrees here and it's mostly not raining...
I think we'll go to a park and see what we can see.

We beat the raindrops yesterday for a little bit down at the south park.
Didn't take any pictures to speak of, just nice to get out of the house. (y)

When it stops snowing in the Cascades I'd like to go looking for old barns. They make great photo-ops.

Th.. th.. that's all folks!

:F
I think I once again failed my left hearing test. Same audiologist different hospital system. I followed him but they have no access to previous tests as the hospital that dropped the ball losing my ENT upon retirement is not giving out that info. Healthcare at its finest.

Supposedly a new and improved BAHA hearing device has replaced my old. Would be nice to have Bluetooth wired into my skull as I can hear few phone calls on a standard phone. My iPhone has the audio but home phone is just a waste of breath for the caller. Now the new ENT to see what she has to say.
Good Morning RFC'rs, et al:

Karen is off, Driving Mrs Daisey.

I'm going out to the Ballistic Laboratory to play.

Welcome New Guy.

Bedding is not difficult, but very scary. The possibility is permanently gluing your action into the stock. You may experience a sleepless night.

G'morning, y'all. We've had going on four hours of light rain/fog & mist so far this morning. 64° @ 8:34 A, wind S 14, RH 93%. Everything is nice and wet. Weasels say it will turn to sunshine by noon and winds will increase to the low 20's w/gusts to the low 30s w/temp peaking at 86. It will be sticky hot and challenging for the afternoon's sporty clays league targets. That's okay by me. At least we will be able to shoot. I'll be loading some more 7/8's oz 12 ga target rounds in throw-away hulls. #7.5's this time and for use today, being one of those folks that believes in using the largest shot size allowed on clay targets that have been rained on. It may not matter a whit, but whot one thinks matters a lot, when shooting. I'm not annal like some folks that I've known of who believe that their cartridges must be oriented 'just so' before closing their guns. Routines are fine, but that borders on being pagan ritual. I prefer to shoot sporty clays from a gun down/low gun position as is required for FITASC and as sporty clays was originally, before NSCA adopted the 'any way ya want to, that's not unsafe' rule that instantly kicked the door open for pre-mounted shooting. I will admit there are some target presentations now, that you are not likely to break if you don't, like I spoke of the other day. There were no presentations like that prior to the rule change. Not a complaint, just saying. Stuff happens and rules are oft dynamic. Birds in the field don't fly thru hoops, like they do in skeet. Adapt to the situation at hand & roll with it, same as we are doin' here.

Bride is going over this morning to do some landscaping and install some plants of colour for an elder GF who is unable to do so herself these days. I'm looking at it like her placing some coloured living Easter eggs for her friend's enjoyment and satisfaction. Coffee is good this wet morning and I'm sending some coffee cake along with her for the both of them to enjoy together sometime this morning. Bride doesn't mind werkin' in her wellies for a friend. It's a good trait and one I'm glad that she has. A bit of kindness can go a long way in making one's day.

So, whot are ya gonna be loading today, Don? And when will you be able to make another range trip? I need to make time to try & find a good mud bank where I could legally do some general blastinating on a summer afternoon. Making big holes in the mud, shooting at sticks, stick-ups, old cans & assorted junk and trapped flotsam was one of my fav.
pastimes w/my buds when we were growing up. Dump rats were good fun too, but I don't know of any places that is allowed. Not even the county dump where the cabin is located. Nope, and you have to pay by the bag to leave your trash these days... and can only do that on certain days. Times have changed but the memories linger. Oh, well.

Pull!

Have done numerous pillars successfully but no bedding yet.
Another Ram, Al?
Rumor has it the truck has been replaced?

New ENT visit went well and I like her, much preferred to see an APNP than an MD, they take the time to explain stuff better IMOP. MD’s in my experience don’t have that bedside manner and it is below them to explain what is going on. My regular NP I’ve followed around for the past six or seven years is leaving the system in June. They give me a list of MD’s as a replacement. With no scheduled visits I’d prefer to find out directly from him where he is moving on to so I can follow. Likely a VA move as many do in this area so no more great Dr for me. Perhaps a fresh set of eyes isn’t such a bad idea if they know differently.
Pillars are easy and worthwhile on synthetic stocks as you can actually torque action bolts without the heads disappearing in mushy stocks. As I said before either there was poor bedding from a bad mold or overtorqued by the monkey assembling the factory rifle to create that crack in bolt cutout.
I even bedded my CZ stocks for the 452 V after making pillars. Liberal coat of paste wax to action and other metal parts and epoxy putty that you knead in you palm. I use the epoxy Carquest carries made for plastic and it’s easy to work with and done in a few hours. Good stuff and a whole lot less scary than runny epoxy getting in places that will make it permanent.
Pete’s Pillars likely has the pillars premade for you rifle Kansas if you don’t have a lathe. If I had accurate measurements for action bolt size and length needed as well as action diameter if round where they seat I could turn a couple and send them to you. My maximum collet size on the instrument lathe is 5/16” outside diameter though.

One can also make pillars from round tubing and just cut to length.

LRS is a party of four and bunches of wind. Shooting just the .223 Wylde and able to put one on the 1000 yard target after chowing down on moi bougie breakfast. 😀
