WELCOME TO THE WATERING HOLE

A stress-free place to gather and share whatever is on your mind! A fun place of mutual respect where you can hang your hat, vent, relax and shoot the bull for a while!

Happy Easter to all who celebrate that faith.

To all others, Happy Spring!

Easter symbolizes a new beginning, so it is fitting that TWH has a new beginning as well!
Along with RFC, TWH has been remodeled!

Actually, it can be anything you imagine it to be!

I am happy to announce that due to the increased bandwidth of the new RFC, there is no longer a need for the weekly closing and re-opening of TWH!!! After 10+ years of weekly "flipping" we now get to keep the doors open continuously! My sincere thanks to our moderators, especially Sophia, for making this possible!

I would also like to thank all the members who have kept this boat afloat for so long! We have become like family here, and now have a permanent residence! (y) While we have many long-time members who have been enjoying the company found in this amazing virtual bar, we also welcome all new folks. Jump right in! The first drink is always on the house and Veterans always have an open bar!
Al The Infidel (Tubby Slayer extraordinaire) is the bar manager.

So, let's get this re-opening celebration going! Set 'em up, Al! Drinks all around!!!

Happy Easter everyone.

Well more changes. Happy Rhody gets a break but always looked forward to his intro's.

I miss Wook's blue characters as it made it easy to find his posts while scrolling. Glad Wook avoided that hispanic who probably did not even have a driver's license. I have always carried uninsured motorist for that reason.

My grass is starting to grow in this Texas spring weather but the weeds grow faster. Instead of mowing I just took the weed whacker to all the weeds. Looks like I mowed the lawn. Five minutes and done.

Hope everyone has a good Easter Sunday and the kids find all their eggs.

The IT guys got away with doing that in commercial buildings for years. They even had little dart guns to shoot string to pull cables with. Some times trying to lift a suspended ceiling panel had so many cables on top it was heavy. We electricians had to support all our wires. Finally the powers that be changed the electrical code to make the IT guys support and bundle their cables. This was only because the fire departments had trouble fighting fires with all the IT cables in their way.
Shortly after this I had an IT guy ask me if he could use my hangers to run his cables. I told him not very politely what he could do with his cables.

And in other news :)

Now that was funny. Reminds me of one of the true sayings in the military. The most dangerous thing in the service is a 2ndLt with a map.

Cleaned up almost three sections of trail this morning. One section I’ve ridden once and thought death was eminent. I didn’t even like walking it with snow falling as there’s a 300’ near vertical drop off to the side of the foot wide trail. Other sections of that trail are steep climbs and steep downhills strewn with sharp pointy rocks.
With those two sections cleared went onto the next looking for what blocked my son. Sawed up the first downed tree and pulled the brush off to side then continued on. Found what I believe was sons blockade which will require help clearing as it’s too large for this old guy. Cut some on it but with top pushing against a hill and trunk snapped off eight foot off ground it felt like it was going to roll over on me. Pinched bar and thrown chain, done till tomorrow with help and pulling equipment.
Even signed my name with the saw!

Nice to have trails within the city limits for a quick spin.
Do you have snow tires on your bikes? 😁
I hope it helps.
Leg cramps are fun too. Probably the most pain my wife has consistently seen me in is leg or hand cramps. I didn't laugh off my 1 kidney stone either though.
I've had broken arms, legs,,ribs, fingers, toes and nose. Multiple knee operations. NOTHING compared to the pain of a kidney stone. Got it zapped with ultrasound. Now I severely limit my salt intake.
I am very tempted to get a twitter account now. Yeehaw.

Mornin',

My sight elevation wheel should arrive today, that will get me closer to getting to shoot the old Mossberg. Now if the wind would ever stop blowing. I thought maybe it was my imagination, but doing some weather research, we have had an unusual number of more windy days this spring than normal. Goes along with the temperature swings we have seen caused by different weather patterns.
Same here in Texas. The weather guessers say the average wind speed this month is 14.2 mph. Has not been this windy this month in Texas since 1992. Windy and warm so far.

Neighbors are coming over for dinner and our wives decided that we’re having lobster, and Dungeonus crab, baked-did potatoe along with fresh corn harvested and bought from the local State University. For this celebration of Father’s Day there’s a couple cakes for dessert. 👍
Many years ago I visited a friend of mine who was a guide in Juneau, AK. He had a 45ft boat and we were going to fish for halibut. We spent two days fishing but no halibut. One night he put out a crab pot for dungeonus crab. The next morning we pulled up the pot to find a total of three. Not even enough for lunch. I suggested we dive for them. My friend thought this an excellent idea. The water is very cold but we both had dry suits. I followed him down the anchor line while he carried the bag for crabs.

Like all sea creatures crabs are out foraging for food at night and hide during the day. Night diving you see more of everything. He was swimming circles around the anchor line without getting any crabs. The bottom was mud. The crabs were everywhere buried in the mud but you could see their outlines so I scooped up one in each hand. You have to scoop them up from behind to avoid getting a finger in a claw.

I tapped him on the back and put my two crabs in the bag. I had put 10 crabs in the bag before he even saw one. We had over a dozen and boiled them for lunch. Best crab I ever ate. Fresh out of the water. He complained about me getting all the crabs. I did not know he had not been diving for crabs before.

Did not catch any halibut but did get crabs.

It's cooled off five degrees, to a mere 102 on the only relevant scale.

Academy Sports has 10' X 30" Swimming Pools for $49.95. Add a pump from Amazon for $50 and a tarp from Harbor Freight.

It's filling right now.

Supposed to get hot later this week.
Let me know when it's filled and I will be right over. It's very hot here in TX too!

This is the only one we saw on the trip up to Marquette today to pick up D1's SUV. The prime viewing area along M95 had a road construction crew doing seal crack on the tarvia. Saw the aftermath of a Florida driver hitting one with a pickup a few years ago as we narrowly missed him the evening before. They could care less what is in their way and just trot across without warning. Will bring some better glass along for the return trip with her car. Front rotors changed out and new ceramic pads, tomorrow I tackle side seals on the rear axle and hopefully don't find rusty pitted shaft surface where the seals attempt to keep the oil in. Any rust will be polished out with emery cloth and well greased with OMC waterproof grease before reassembly. There was an improved design that come out as a service bulletin with very expensive replacement shafts and side seals later. At least she has selectable AWD and can turn the real drive off with a flip of the switch.

I remember those days. I was the service manager and only mechanic for a fleet of vehicles. Mine, my wife's and daughters. Seems like I was working on one or more every weekend. Could not afford to have someone else do it.

Back in my yute I was also on the track and X country teams. I am sure I ran miles but it is a distant memory now. Ran miles while in the Marines also. Our Marine corps diving instructor ran us 13 miles nonstop one time.

After multiple knee surgeries I cannot run at all but can still walk just fine. Thanks to having some of the best knee surgeons work on me. A word of advice when dealing with knee surgeons. Get one that specializes in knees. Not a hospital surgeon that says he does it all.

I started walking over a year ago to lose weight. Lost some but not much. Then I decided to buy an Ebike. I have been riding 20 miles every day for 3 months and getting much more exercise. While I have not stepped on a scale my pants have more room and my belt is now two notches smaller.

Gee Kevin. Your State AG is a real piece of work. Published a list of every gun owner, including the 'A Salt Weapon' registry.

Glad I live in Texas. Never used an FFL or registered a firearm for this very reason. The guberment does not know what I have.

What I don’t need gets fixed and donated. The guy I helped out with the sale and bike giveaway is super nice and thanked me today for helping out. While my daughter and her boyfriend were picking out bikes a van pulled up with parents and six kids. Everyone got a free bike and he fixed them up for them as they waited. The kids had been praying for bikes to ride since snow melt. That made his day being able to help out a large family in need. He also donated all proceeds from the barn bikes to the church.
Seeing kids on bikes is a rare occurrence these days which is so wrong. I haven’t seen one kid ride by on a bike in the last week of fixing bikes. Unless there was a foot of snow my son rode his two miles to work all winter.

I see a few kids on bikes at the park I ride at but not many.

I ride past my neighbor's house on the way to the park. He has a 4 year old boy who always stops me on the way from the park to play him after I'm worn out. He always wants to race me on his bike and I let him win. He has a small bike with training wheels.

Last week he learned how to ride a bike without training wheels and could not wait to show me. He is very fast. Now I don't have to let him win because he is already faster than me with his new larger bike.

When riding last evening my front tire went flat. It held air long enough to get home. I haven't had a tire repair kit since I was a kid. I should have purchased two inner tubes before this and now I shall. I won't be riding this morning in the cooler air but will this evening in the heat.

I am still riding 20 miles every day and if this keeps up will have to buy pants with a smaller waist size.

Looks like a wise move to me.

We have ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) to manage the electrical grid here in Texas. Electric reliability council. Sounds like an oxymoron similar to "military intelligence". Two months ago the news interviewed two knuckle heads from this state agency. They stated we did not have to worry about electrical grid problems. When one of them stated it had already been tested this summer.

Yes it was. At 95* in daytime falling to 72* at night. Now it is 103* and close to low of 89* at night. A better test methinks.

Just as soon as the interview ended I ordered a portable dual fuel whole house generator. Justin Case. I remembered two years ago in the winter when thousands were without power for days because the electrical grid was not winterized. So far this summer two towns have been without power. 3100 house holds in Plano,Tx were without power for about a day and a half. Another small town of 2700 households without power for a short time.

I hope I don't have to use it but if I do I will still be in the A/C and my refrigerator will still run.

In the news this morning.

Danger of rolling blackouts.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, said it was asking for voluntarily conservation between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time due to record high electric demand because of the heat wave, and also because of low wind. ERCOT said current projections show wind generation coming in less than 10% of capacity.
The National Weather Service said temperatures will reach or exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit in areas ranging from the Big Country to Central Texas regions. A heat advisory is in effect for the Dallas-Fort Worth region into East Texas, where temperatures will reach or exceed 103 degrees.
Texas operates its own grid separate from the rest of the United States. That grid failed during a winter storm in February 2021.

Yep.Ray Charles could have seen this coming. Especially after those two knuckleaded officials from ERCOT told us we did not have to worry about the grid this summer. Might as well be living in Californistan.

Well OD,s prepared with his generator. Just going to buy more gas this morning. Justin Case.

Had one for the 6th and they extended me until Nov. as of today I am past the age where they can make you serve... (y)
I too am past the age for jury duty. Thank goodness.

I got called many years ago. In a large room of over 300 prospective jurors, I called my boss and told him I would be back to work by lunch. Much to my chagrin I was not only picked but voted jury foreman by lunch.. I was not a happy camper.
Age discrimination I tell ya!

Trial lasted all week. A felon out on probation beat the heck out of his ex wife. She called the police who took very good pictures of her injuries.

It was a slam dunk case imho. We voted to convict and told we had to sentence him to between 15 and 90 years because of his previous record. We gave him 30 years and he had to serve 15 before he was eligible for parole.

At the conclusion the judge informed us if we had any questions he and the prosecution and defense would be available in the court room. All we wanted was to return to the jury room, pick up our belongings and go home.

I opened the jury room door to leave only to find it blocked by both councils and the judge. They wanted to talk about the trial. We just wanted to leave. They told us we did a good job though.

Cost me a weeks pay. Glad I am too old now.

Texas is currently in the grip of a heatwave and, since May, six power plants have already been tripped in the state.
Trying to do its bit to help, Tesla has sent an in-car noitification to owners telling them to avoid charging between 3pm and 8pm if they can help it.
The message reads: A heat wave is expected to impact the grid in Texas over the next few days. The grid operator recommends to avoid charging during peak hours between 3pm and 8pm, if possible, to help statewide efforts to manage demand.
The power grid in Dallas Ft Worth has not gone down yet but Tesla doesn't want the blame if it does.
OD has his generator on standby. Justin Case.
