Just received 5 containers of this fine 22LR ammo. I’m afraid to shoot it looking at the condition of it.

I, too, am on the no-Winchester rimfire bandwagon. And that's kind of a shame, 'cause when I was youngster in the '70s and '80s, it was really quite decent stuff.
Had a weak moment in early '20 and actually bought a case of Winchester Wildcat .22lr just before the COVID-era panic shortage (saw it coming).
Came to my senses and gave it to some guys putting on a youth shoot. Even warned 'em, "Hey, this is what it is, but it's yours if you want it." They took it.
Never had occasion to miss it.

Exactly; Dad would buy Wildcats, it was "the good stuff*", I usually had a brick of Thunderbolts...it was good enough for a kid.

Looks like two things happened:

Box got compressed.

There was a chemical reaction of some kind with the black copper plating.

Looks like storage and shipping damage.

Go after the seller.

I shot a bunch or wild cat bricks as a kid in the 80s. I had one of those smoke colored
"Eagle" high capacity 30rd 10/22 mags.
I don't recall ever having issues.
Then I bought Winchester rimfire ammo again during the Obama panic era.
That was the last time.
I still buy Winchester center fire stuff. It still works fine for me.

The last Winchester that I tried did about an inch and a half at fifty yards and had half a dozen duds in a box, and that was the more expensive Super X HVHP loads. Before that I tried some subsonic, the 40 trainers that I believe are discontinued now. They weren't terrible but that has been quite a few years ago.

Did you buy from the manufacturer? From a store? Or from someone on ebay?

I prefer to buy directly from a manufacturer if I can. Federal has their own retail.

Winchester has good ballistucs for 25 and 32 ACP. Hopefully this does not reflect their quality.

Thing is I bought a box a couple years ago and it shot fantastic out of my Marlin 39A, so when I saw it was available I bought a brick to try in a few other guns. I was going to hollow point it but the case won’t fit in the drock die I have. I scrape the loose coating off the bullet nose and go from there. It shoots alright considering. Just wondering if that stuff will clean off.
