If you're going to be in San Antonio during June 17-20 you might want to check out the Sportsmans Team Challenge. It's a great team shoot, and you get a chance to see some great shooters in rifle, pistol, and shotgun matches. They have a web site. It's sportsmansteamchallenge.com
I lived in San Antonio in the 70's & 80's. Best gun shop back then was Dury's. It's a family run business. Great selection and good salesmen. I'm sure they're still around.
Left New Mexico in 1981. Santa Fe had few decent gun shops. Outdoorsman Of Santa Fe 530 N. Guadalupe Street was biggest (with prices to match). In Albuquerque Ron Peterson on 4418 Central Ave SE. was well stocked. Shooter's Den 2729 San Mateo Blvd NE used to have exotic guns. [The other ones I used to deal with have closed down due to old-as-dirt owners]. In San Antonio (1985 to 1991) best buys were at the gun show. Good proces are at gun shops way outside of the city. Old Fort Trading Post (210) 433-3351 750 N General Mcmullen Dr was decent; had a lot of Kleingunther and BSA 'martine-henry' target rifles. If you drive down I 10, through El Paso, look up in the yellow pages gun and pawn shops in El Paso; gun country, a lot of lever and cowboy sixshooters make it over the border from Mexico into El Paso. Well that's just common sense anywhere you go, not just germane for El Paso

Alas, we only have 2 Gun Shops in town, and as they have the corner on the market both are somewhat guilty of price gouging, one (Kirk's) more than the other (El Paso Gun Exchange). Neither will give a price break or discount, regardless of whether or not you're Law Enforcemnt, Military, etc. You could probably fiddle-fart around all the Pawn Shops in town all day long looking for Pancho Villa's pistol, but truth is not many firearms cross the border into pawn shops (I work on the border). 20 or more years ago, maybe. Now, no.

There's little, or nothing in Las Cruces, N.M. either (40 miles or so west of El Paso), though I hear tell of a decent place out in Deming, N.M. Supposed to have new stuff, mil-surplus, etc. and maybe gives a discount. However, Deming is 70 some miles west of Cruces, so unless you've got absolutely nothing better to do than perhaps go on a wild goose chase. . . . .

Best bet- Give Albuquerque a look, or better still, San Antonio.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for suggestions so far. Won't have much time for stops on Santa Fe to San Antonio leg; was wondering if much in the El Paso area - looks like not much reason to stop. Will probably stick to Albuquerque area, maybe some time in San Antonio and possibly Austin areas, to cruise gun shops (after I "reluctantly" convince with my wife that she shouldn't feel guilty about leaving me on my own while she enjoys a day at the spa in Santa Fe).
Well in San Antonio:
Drurys is a good place. Been a couple yrs since I was over there though.
You might check out the Powderhorn. Neat little store and the guys in there are great.
That's really all I can think of right now.

If you go to Austin, check out McBride's.
