I bought a standard birch stock for the Ruger 10/22 and I would like to do some tinkering with it. First, what is the best way to strip the factory finish off of the stock. Second, after I am finished carving on the stock what is the best type of finish to put back on it?

The best way I've found to strip a stock is by sanding.As to the best way to finish it afterwards it a matter of personal preference. I have stocks with tung oil,tru-oil,polyurethane,and automotive clearcoats.I think they all do their job if applied correctly,but the real thing is what look you are going for.
