It can be done.
To wit: When training youngsters to shoot, not wanting to buy a single-shot rifle expressly for that purpose, I used a 10/22 or 77/22 - but never removed the magazine, so that the youngsters wouldn't find out until much later that they were learning on a repeater. (who was the ones that didn't know about guns ?

The kids had N.P., shoving a single round down into the magazine B 4 closing the action.

My son took my fathers gun to a scout shooting event some yrs ago. A ss Western auto 22 LR, the only gun my Dad ever owned.
The son said "boy that old gun will shoot."
He also noted that some other scouts ha problems w/ their fancy semi autos and it didn't seem they shot nearly as good.
SS are good beginners for basic rules of shooting.
