Hi Folks, I bought a Government Competition and I am looking for a sight. I'm having a hard time deciding between a Busihnell Holosight, DoctorSight/Jpoint, Firepoint or similar optic. Can you give me a recommendation?

Also, does anyone have a preference between the Volquartsen and Weigand weaver base?

Thanks.

As my recent post states, I just installed an Ultra Dot sight on my Mk 512. I used the Weigand base and it worked fine. This base mounts using the rear sight dovetail. No additional drilling/tapping necessary. I installed the base myself. I cannot comment on the VQ base.

I just don't like the heads up style red dot like the holo or Dr. site. Maybe it is because I learned to shoot a tube style dot first.
I had Tasco optima, which is about the same as the Dr. site, on a open class USPSA gun. I hated to change the battery in it because you have to completely unbolt the site from the gun. I always felt like I had to site the gun in again after I changed the battery.
If I had my choice for a red dot scope it would be the Aimpoint comp. :t

To be honest I can't tell a difference between the Comp and the M unit other than the M comes with flipup caps. The diff must be internal, because if you pop the caps off the M you have what appears to be the Comp model. Oh, Aimpoint doesn't ship a mounting ring with the M model any more, but the ring you get with the Comp is just a huge, awful looking thing that is not worth having. I got a new ring from SWFA.com for $19.

I recently purchased a MK II Slabside Competition. I ordered a Volquartsen base, Burris Zee rings, and a Nikon Monarch 2X20 scope. I am going to use it for target shooting and squirrel hunting. The scope, rings, and base should be here by Thursday or Friday of this week. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get it mounted and sighted in.

I posted a pic of my Beretta 87T with the Aimpoint Comp on it the other day in the gallery section.
The other thing I really like, but forgot to mention, is that the Aimpoint mounts really low. I like to have the scope sitting right on top of the receiver. I am sure it even sits lower than those Solow clamp on 30mm rings.
The only downside to the aimpoint is the cost. They make a good scope and they are proud of it.

The Doc Is From What I Have Been Led To

Believe is an updated copy of the Tasco Optimum(Sp) the rights of which I was told Doc bought from Tasco. The Tasco Version was very durable and took the shock of the slide recoiling and then the shock of returning to battery. I wish I had bought a dozen when they were available from Tasco.

Aimpoint ML2 is the same as the Comp C except that it's mil-spec tough instead of civvie-spec tough. It's also waterproof deeper. The M2 is the same as the ML2 but with night-vision brightness settings.

The Docter Optic is similar to the Tasco Optima, but not identical and may not fit on the same mounts. Everything I've read indicates that it's much more durable than the Tasco. Rumor has it that the Optima has a new life as the JPoint. (Made by JP Enterprises according to one site, but I can't find it on JP's site.)

Was Tapper that game where you had to pour mugs of beer and slide them down the bar to customers?

MikeL- Thanks for the info on the Aimpionts. I have waisted my money on the M model for the shooting that I do.
I didn't realize how similar the M and Comp models were until I bought a Comp the other day. I am buying Comps with flipup caps from now on.

Blackhawk,
Think "sight, pull trigger, quickly reacquire sight, pull trigger again". This is what I mean by DoubleTapper. Very effective way to quickly neutralize threats. Sorry, but I am not familiar with the video game. I'll have to check it out if it involves lots of carnage and senseless destruction.

To rimfire newbie,

Avoid the Holosight (too expensive & clunky), for less cost get the Ultradot tube red dot and SoLow mounts. Clean installation, no drilling and keeps the optics as close to the barrel centerline (this is important). Tree's comment about learning to shoot with tube optics is a truism, converting from tube to HUD (head up display) style red dot is a relearning curve. It took me 6 mos. of 2 to 3 matches a month (USPSA) to finally feel comfortable (Cee More), HUD optics are faster (Optima on IPSC Open Gun). Weigand and Aristocrat make mounts for the Optima/JP/Doctor optics (same mounting) that use the existing Ruger dovetail to secure the adapter plate. I would recommend the Arrendondo battery pack, this innovative device adds an extra battery for better dot intensity. Overall, the closer the optic sight line is to the barrel centerline - the better.

Stick around, we'll help you become smarter and spend your money wisely (if you listen and understand).

Another vote for the Optima type. The JP is a copy of the optima and will fit bases made for the Optima, the DR is not compatable with the same bases. The DR is metal and a bit more durable perhaps. The Dr looks just like a Optima. All are great choices, they are small, light and very user friendly. Tubes are too big and add too much weight and make fitting in a holster much more difficult - IMHO.

Good luck

I notice that 38Super referenced the C-More heads up. It looks like the OKO is a similar sight. Can anyone given the pros and cons of the C-More/OKO type of heads up versus the DR/Optima type?

Since I don't have any expereinec with pistol scopes at all, I don't have the tube/heads up re-learning curve to contend with. I really would like to avoid a tube if there are no significant functional benefits.

C more and OKO are much larger and heavier, made for long guns CQB type work. C more has a grove in it to fall back on should the batteries die but on the other hand the vast majority of people like the OKO better, go to www.ar15.com and search the OPTICS section in the GENERAL forum, you will find lots of info on both the OKO and C-more.( you will find them on handguns, as a matter of fact they are used a lot in IPSIC... but these are guns with much larger frames)

Dr, Jpoint, Optima, and the one CZ mounts to their CZ75 line ( the name eludes me - fire point or something like that)are nice and small, all look very much alike. The Optimas had a grove in them aldso so that if the batteries failed you were not SOL. You will need to decide what size dot you want Optimas were 2 & 3.5 MOA I think. All four differ in some way from the other, e.g. the DR is metal, and wil not fit onto a Optima mount...

My 2c - I have an Optima on a MKII and so does my shooting buddie, neither of us would ever change, we are always on the hunt for Optimas.

Good luck
