Shot my first match today! Very fun! Any tips?

Hi all!
Well today was a great day in West Virginia. I shot my first ever small bore steel silhouette match today. I hit 10/40 which was below my goal of 12 but had fun. I wanted to reach out to everyone and see if folks had tips on how to do better. This was a 40 shot match with chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams. I did best on rams and worst on chickens and turkeys.
Questions! How bad is a 10? Can someone give me a break down on the classes of shooter? Any tips on magnification for each animal and shooting in general?

Here is what I was using. It’s a savage MK II VSR Walmart Special with a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16 on it. Thanks all!

No, I want to actually hit something.
I understand, go have some fun at some local matches. If you have the time/money definitely go to Lapua Super Shoot and or Nationals. Try to visit / support other ranges around you. I've only shot at Fairfax and went to Cavalier for lever action, so I need to listen to my own advice. But there are many very good shooters and you can see how they stand etc and experiment what works for you or just talk them up.

My main goal, other than safety, is having fun...and not finishing last place. So far I've managed to meet those goals at every match. Mostly shoot rimfire challenge and MARS (.22 PRS stuffs). Silhouette is my new addiction. The main problem is not having any competitions near by, the best ones are 2 - 2 1/2 hours each way, so not worried too much about travel, but it would be great to not have to drive that far.

The next Small Bore Silhouette match (that I know of) is 19 Nov...planning to attend that, and get started.

I taped up one of the 50’ silhouette targets in the basement for dry fire practice…at 10x power I still shake around pretty good, but I think I can hit some. I’m a little short, I can only get 47’ but should be close enough.

Tried the "scaled to 50 foot" paper target practice at the indoor range with my 1712 Silhouette rifle today, did about what I expected, brought the suck got 2/20 hits on my first two targets. I taped up the first target in the garage, so I'll have a reminder of how I started. More practice needed; work on form/steadiness/conditioning...hopefully I'll do better than "embarrassing" at my first match in 2 1/2 weeks. 😎

Don't be embarrassed, small bore silhouette is in a word "challenging", keep at it and you will improve.
Cowpokey, you mentioned, in an earlier post, that you were planning to attend a silhouette match in late November... did you make it to the match... if so, how was it? Fun, I hope.
I'm getting stuff ready for the last HP silhouette match of 2022, held in Dawsonville Georgia this coming Saturday. Any of you guys/gals that enjoy silhouette and are close to Georgia should come out and give it a try. While I shoot and enjoy most silhouette disciplines, HP is my absolute favorite. It's hard to describe where the difference in enjoyment comes from, but hitting a ram at 500m offhand and watching it slowly fall off the stand, is super cool. So if you guys have a hunting rifle that fits the bill, and some ammo to burn, come out and join us. It's a run what you brung type of match, turn out is light, usually only 6-10 competitors, and it's very laid back. If any have interest check out the details on Riverbend gun clubs website.

Didn't go, the weather was not desirable...cold and windy. I'm not personally limited to "perfect weather", but I'm not going to a match to be miserable either.
I understand that completely. We go to have fun, and it's not much fun when its miserable out. Well this will give you all winter to practice, experimenting with different holds and the like. That way come spring you'll be ready and can shoot when its pleasant to be outside. I've shot matches when it was bitter cold and windy, it really changes it from a good time to an endurance test.
