Sent my Frontier back to Henry again and again and again.

I am wondering if Henry is even capable of making a good barrel, could not prove it by what they have sold me. The original barrel Henry forgot to rifle the last quarter inch of the barrel. i sent it back to Henry and they did a "muzzle adjustment". What they did was scratch out the area that should have been rifled. This rework shot better than before but not great. I finally decided that I deservered better than a less than mediocre gun and sent it back to have it a new barrel installed. The gun came back with all new parts besides a new barrel but this one looked good with the bore scope but shot worse than the "muzzle adjusted barrel".

The problem with the new barrel was that the third of the barrel near the chamber was a lot smaller than the two thirds near the muzzle. It took about three times the force to push a tight patch through the last third of the barrel.

I am hoping the fourth time is a charm but I will not bet on it.

With all the "not so good" comments about Henry, I'm going to buy one anyway. I don't expect great accuracy--just fun shooting. If I get a real lemon, I'll send it back to Mr. Imperato. Looking for the 22 WMR Frontier with the 24" barrel because it is threaded. I wish I could drive to the factory and buy one in person. I think they are only about 3 hours from East Central MN.

If I ever find one, I'll put up some targets and post some pics here. Right now I have to shoot down my driveway which is lined with 6-8 foot snow walls and nowhere to put the 3-5 inches predicted for tomorrow. If I tried to get into the field I'd be up to my waist. I might be stuck until May and then I'll have to wait for the mud to dry up!

BTW, doesn't anybody make third party barrels for Henry rifles--or is that not a real thing for level guns?

I do not think anybody makes aftermarket barrels for any Henry guns. I just had a Shilen barrel fitted to my Big Boy Steel but that would cost about as much as the gun. Skinner makes some good aftermarket peep sights that should work well Ranger Point Precision makes aftermarket trigger kits for their centerfire rifles but they haven't made one for their rimfires yet.
I have a Golden Boy in LR that shoots fantastic. It’s smooth action has been flawless. I will be buying one in magnum soon. I hope it’s a good one too.

Well, they made one good one and I have it. It's slightly more accurate than the Marlin 39 A I owned at that time. Even with that long barrel it is better balanced too. 1" groups at 50 with a lever action off a rest isn't bad at all with something like CCI-SV.

My H001 has no problem going 17 for 20 in Lever Action Silhouette matches with Aguila SE HV ammo. The misses are me, not the rifle, but I will admit there are some better ammo to use in it.

Henry just emailed me saying they are going to send me a new rifle. I have my hopes up and really don't want to have to add another "again" to the post.

Henry sent me a new rifle and I finally had time to go to the range with it. It is set up with a peep sight that I use for Lever Silhouette and a front post. I had a very disappointing first trip. I was using three types of ammo. The smallest group was just over 1.5' and most were 2.5"+. I brought my similarly set up Uberti 94 to make sure it wasn't me having a bad day, as usual all its groups were well under an inch.

When running a tight patch down the bore there were several tight spots near the chamber but they were not as bad as the other barrel. I have had very good success with fire lapping bores that had tight spots to improve the accuracy.

The second range trip was rewarding. After lapping the rifle shot about an 1.5" higher with the same ammo so after some sight adjustment I played around a little bit shooting the paper pig offhand then settled in to see how it would shoot at the bench. There was some gusting wind that was moving the plastic fence that we hang our targets on that caused a little vertical movement of the target so I tried to shoot in between gusts. My three five shot groups came in at just over an inch and close to the same type of groups I shot with my Henry BBS that has an Identical set up.

Maybe I should lap my H001.
It's been relegated as a 100% plinker for now. It doesn't stand up to my other rimfire rifles after its 3rd visit to Henry.
I'm happy enough with it for a campsite gun, or just something to burn up subpar ammo.
Maybe there IS room for improvement yet!

I use a Wheeler lapping kit and Super Sniper bullets for lapping 22lr's. The 60grn bullet in a short case gives a lot of lead to rub the compound into.

it’s not nor does it pretend to be a benchrest rifle, maybe just enjoy it as it is.
