For an super compact hunter/plinker scope it's hard to beat the Weaver Classic 4x32 fixed power shotgun scope. Like a rimfire scope the Weaver shotgun scope is set to be parallax free at 50yrds. The scope is bright and super clear and a pleasure to use. Because it's a shotgun scope it's also rugged and has a ton of eye relief. It's a $200 scope on clearance for $80 at Natchez.

I also like the Weaver RV9 3-9x32 w/AO Classic Rimfire. This is what I've bought for my latest build. It's small and light - just slightly longer than the 4x32 and has an adjustable objective so it's suitable for a target scope as well as a plinker/hunter. ~$200.
