i like using sand filled old jeans legs but those sand bags are getting too heavy, about six, seven, to be carrying back and forth from the shed to the table. have read here maybe that cat litter and the stuff used to absorb oil in the garage is about the same. cant rem the price diff. also cat litter turns to "concrete" when it gets wet. maybe, i need a little red wagon. lol.

anyone use the oil absorber? how does it work in cut-off jeans legs??
suppose putting it in a baggie first may be a good idea. stable enuff?

I used corn media in a Caldwell Tack Driver bag and this seems to work well, but not cheap.

Hey Ricochet, I used to use perlite or vermiculite in my jean leg bags. Very light. What is it? Does you wife have house plants? You know the white fluffy stuff in you see in the potting mix, that's it. You can get big bags of it from the plant nursery, or the yard shop in Kmarts, Wal marts that kind of place. You like ACE from what I remember, they might have it. Superlight but settles a rifle almost like sand. Give it a.....shot :t :t

dont have a wife anymore. she took off with a non gun nut, think he is a long haul trucker; same thing, but remember vermiculite. yea, rem that stuff. never helped the plants, got a brown thumb, lol. but yea, will try it out, and if i am lucky will have peonies pushing thru the bags as a camo thingee. good idea.

dwarren, thanks, but looking for el cheapo. can get all the sand i want, but is getting too heavy to be lugging around.

I use wheat in my home made bags. Bit lighter than sand cause it doesn't pack down as dense but I'm able to nestle it down nicely to make a nice rest. Might be worth a try. I use it in both my front and rear bags that I made.

I do shoot competition and the rules definately call for sand only in the bags.

However, nice warm bread with butter, still tastes better than a mouthfull of sand.

some good ideas here, but has anyone tried the oil absorbent stuff ??

vermiculite. vince, you gave me an idea, how about potting soil ?? lite and dense enuff, and comes in plastic bags.

shandy, wheat. am surrounded by wheat fields. need to coax a few bucket fulls out of a farmer when they harvest, but will be in august. dont wanna wait.

surprisingly, no one mentioned cat litter.

BTW, anyone know what is used in those "bean bag" chairs ??

Plastic polypropylene pellets, used for molding, is what you'll often find in bean bag chairs. I'm trying bags using a "denser" plastic pellet made of acetal. It's about 50% heavier than the bean bag material.

Try using rice. That's what I use in my Caldwell bags. It's a lot lighter than sand. Plus you can find 5 to 20 pound bags at your local super market.

rice would be good, but too xpensive here and it is my main staple.

anyone try the matching sticky one side velcro. am wondering if it sticks well to denim and such. would make it a lot easier to fill, empty the bags if needed.

i have used both the corn cob media as well as walnut hulls. (both brass polishing media). i like the walnut hulls (ground not whole ) the best but it does cost me around 15.00 to fill my rest.

just take some young kid with you to the range, let him carry the bags full of sand.. and get him (or her) shooting!

trying to imagine how many thousands of beads in 12 lbs. ha, ha, may stick with sand; free and is right where i fish........oh well
