Ruger Flat Gate

Just got this 1955 Flat Gate today.Bought it from a fella on another Forum..

It has no box, but came with the original Manual..Warranty card, original sales receipt with a sales price of 62.95, and the original grips. Also came with a police permission certificate from the great State of NJ, signed by the Police Chief giving him permission to own it in 1955..Till today I never even realized you could own a Handgun in NJ,LOL

Grips on it were custom made by the original owner...Probably put the mint originals back on when I find a grip screw for them..

It is as close to new as you could find for a old Flat Gate going on 70 years old..I doubt it has had more than a handful of rounds fired through it..I would like to find a box, and there is a good chance a friend her locally will have one for me..He is a big Ruger collector..

I am not too much into Rugers, but I think the price was attractive, and I did have a flat gate in my youth,,

Forgot..Thankfully it has never suffered the horrible fate of Rugers stupid transfer bar update..
Oh, that is so nice, a real piece of firearms history there! Congratulations are in order.

Awesome, would love to find one that nice. Beautiful gun! Congrats.
Thanks the fella said it was like New yet and he was not lying..

I called Ruger this morning and they are sending me out a couple grip screws..No charge,,Nice deal there..But he said they are stainless screws..I assume the original might have been blued..Not a huge deal..But would be nice to have what is original if they were indeed blued..And not stainless..

Just a side note that is wrote in the paperwork..I guess even if it was never fired by the original owner..Ruger said in the literature that came with it, they fired 15 rounds through every Firearm at the time..So even a new in the box one would have been fired..

Pic of the Holster rig..I will likely be passing that on to someone with an appropriate size waste..

I certainly wouldn't worry about the stainless steel grip screw. Just enjoy that beautiful Single-six!d

From pics can’t really tell but those grips may be original Ruger. Not for Flatgate but later model. I have early 60 that has those dark burl walnut grips. Got it NIB and still have box and Docs.

Thanks

I do not think there is much chance that those custom ones are Ruger made..They are stamped with a Initial and a date of like 11-01-1955 on the back of of one of them...They are some sort of black Ebony plastic composition..Not wood for sure..

Here a pic with the correct grips and the marking on the backside of the custom ones.

I just have a 6 40 Ace Hardware Gun Screw in the grips right now till the new ones arrive..

They look like some stock late model grips for sure. Those stock grips are a prize alone. Ruger stopped using the red griffon after Mr. Sturm died.

Maybe it is my flash or something but the emblems in the picture on the original checkered grips are black..Not red..I am sure the checkered grips are original to the Revolver the day it was made....The black plastic smooth custom ones I do not think are Ruger at all..They were custom I am near 100% on that..

Hope I am not misunderstanding what you are saying,LOL
Maybe it's just the flash. They do look red but if they are glossy could be a reflection
Here are a couple pics of the custom grips..They do appear to have a wood grain to them under the black..Probably never know the origin of them, as the only identifying feature to them is the Initial B and the date. 1-31-1955

B just happens to my First name Initial..But I did not make them..LOL They are pretty cool grips though..

The originals did have blued screws. The grips are probably ebony. I'd keep them over the black rubbers.

I personally wouldn't bother with a box, unless you're a collector and need to have the "full set". Because it's going to cost a pretty penny for something that just languishes on a shelf.

FYI, the Single Six never had red eagle medallions. Sturm was gone and the eagle changed to black before the Single Six.
My 56 model has the black medallion and the hard black rubber grips. My 60 model has the later Colt style loading gate with walnut grips. The conversion was never done to my 60.
