I just got my first 17 hmr. Ruger American standard with a 22 inch barrel. Took it out yesterday and I'm getting feeding issues with 3 types of ammo, A17, CCI and Hornady . I'm hoping it's a mag issue. The nose of the cartridge seems to go into the chamber but it gets hung up on the shoulder. I'd hate send the gun back to Ruger which is a huge pain for me. I tightened the stock bolt hoping this helps the next time. Hornady HP ammo get stuck in the mag feeder which seems to be too short for this ammo. I had to take the mag apart several times just to get the cartridges out of the mag. But I had feeding problems with 3 types of ammo.

Measure the OAL of your ammo. SAAMI spec is 1.330"->1.365".

It's very unlikely that 3 different brands would be out of spec. That would leave your magazine to be the problem. Try a different one. If you have problems with another mag as well, then it may be a gun problem. If so, I'd look at the extractor first. Then a call to Ruger if you can't get it resolved yourself.

The metal casting of your magazine looks way off. The front much more so than the rear, but your rear wall also looks thicker than in my magazine. The front rounded part of my magazine easily appears to be about half the thickness of yours.

I've been comparing your picture of your magazine to mine out of my .22 magnum rifle, and I can't see any significant difference. But it's hard to tell for sure by the angle of the picture etc. The first thing I would try is a different magazine.

I called Ruger and they'll send me a new mag. I'm hoping it's just a mag issue. Don't want to go through a hassle of sending the rifle back to Ruger. Any other issues I should look for? Something I can fix myself. Thanks

Ok. I got a new 17 hmr magazine from Ruger and I have narrowed down the feeding issues to one type of ammo. CCI TNT jacketed HP. It gets stuck in both magazines and does not feed well. Anyone have issues like that with HP ammo in their guns?

Since you have a spare magazine now polish the feeding ramp And feed lips on one of them and then try to cycle it again. It reminds me of the white cast but I can’t get that cycle in my 450 bushmaster scout or 450 bushmaster American. It looks like in your photo that the hollow point is hitting too low on the feed ramp In the magazine and grabbing. I take a file to one of them and work it at an angle and then smooth and polish it out so the bullet slides up and out of the magazine. I’m sure a couple strokes of the file and then polishing it smooth will take care of the feeding issues from the way it looks. It needs a nice smooth ramp instead of a wall that looks like it’s hitting in the front of that magazine. I did this with the plastic American magazines and got some really wide flat metplate cast bullets to cycle in my 450BM American.

A different rifle and a different cartridge but the same problem. My 17HH CZ 527 hated HP rounds. Did the same thing. The post regarding the extractor may seem off but that may be your problem. The rim may not be sliding up into the proper position against the bolt face. One way to test is remove the bolt, insert loaded mag and using a wood skewer try to strip a round from the mag.
Another problem may be too much mag spring pressure. This causes excess friction between the rim and the bolt face when stripping a round.

I'm happy to report that the rifle is fine. it was a mag and ammo issue. I polished the feed ramp on one of the mags and now it works fine. The CCI HP ammo is still a bit problematic but not as before. the rifle is crazy accurate. Half an inch groups at 50 yards. 3 out of 5 shots in the same hole with A17 ammo.
