Rounding the edges of an AT-one stock?

959 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  azguy
I love the look of my Boyd’s AT one stock, but I hate holding it. The edges are sharper than a 2x4. I want to sand the edges and round it all off. However, I’m unsure how the wood will look after sanding and how I get it back to the smooth semi gloss finish it has now. It’s a lime green laminated version. What grits should I use? Is there anything I need to ally to it afterwards? look how square the grip is. Ridiculous

Ask Boyds if its lacquer in which case its an easy cheesy finish re-blend.
Alright, so what I did was shape and round it with 80 grit. Then a little more with 150 grit. Then 220. Then 1500 and some water. Then I buffed the shine back out. I like it much better now. The thing is way more comfortable.

I use Gun-Sav’r Hunter Satin from Brownells. Blends very well with whatever finish is used by Boyd’s. This is from experience. I have done a number of rear tang mods where I reshaped the top rear of the wrist to better conform with the top of the Kidd rear tang in use. Just spray as you would any other finish. Light coats.

Quick note. Only works on the standard finish. High gloss stocks are another matter entirely. Stuff is now more than doubled in cost per can. But it does work and it’s a great finish. Very durable
