Richards Microfit question

1253 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  lbjennings
I’m thinking of going with a Richards Microfit stock in a mid grade of walnut for one of my 10/22’s. I was going to have them install the 1/2” butt pad.

Having never done this before, do you sand the pad down with the wood. How are the sides of the pad final finished?

Thanks.

Yes, belt or disk sander. Having them install is a safe bet, not only for fitting but protecting during shipping.

I've finished 2 Richards stocks in the past 10ish years and just ordered a 3rd last Friday. Both of them had the 1/2" pad like yours. I sanded down the pad with it on the stock to keep the size correct. You won't have to sand very much in that area, literally just to smooth out the rough spots. The grip area will be the toughest. On my last stock the forearm had one spot that had a gnarly 'chatter mark' that took a long time to get out while keeping it looking straight. Just go slow and take things easy and it'll look good.

Thanks. This particular rifle is all silver. I think it will look cool with an oil finished dark walnut stock. Going with the simple Marksman design.
One thing I experienced with my Mycroft stock was that the drop in portion of the stock wasn't perfectly drop in, it had to be fitted some to fit in good. The Boyds stock I got was really good from the start, only had to finish it. THANKS

I have done two Richards stocks for my 40x and a CZ452. "Microfit" in my experience is a somewhat optomistic description, both took quite a bit of effort. Both are laminated wood, that stuff is HARD and takes WORK to get anywhere with the sanding .
Just wondering, I checked with Richards a couple years ago, about getting a Howa stock, it was gonna take a while. How are they doing on their delivery times now days?
Now I know all you gents want your gun to have a sole, LOL, Laminated OMG,, got to go to the Bathroom, if you guy's seen this past 200 blanks I cut out of 17 tree's of very hi grade English- French walnut, exhibition to Museum grade material, just lately you may not be able to pay for it, but you would understand how a gun can have a sole, good luck on that project, Best, Gordon Smith, Old Tree Gun Blanks
I'm not really interested in any of my guns having a sole. The only sole I worry about is mine. I think a lot of guys here don't care much for any kind of wood stock and a lot do.
That's what makes this site great. Most people don't paint with a single brush stroke.

Richards "Maybe Fit" has some very attractive stocks for sure....BUT...I am NOT a fan! I have done 2 of their stocks and would never do another one. One for a 10/22 wasn't too bad but the other for a Savage 93R was horrible. Had I REALLY known what I was getting into I would have returned it. I read where they have issues with Savage platforms and I have to agree! The "drop in" wasn't even close! Up to a 1/2" off! My trigger finger needs to be about an inch longer!! I made it work but I am still not totally satisfied with it. Luckily I have done quite a bit of woodworking and have a fairly good supply of tools. I needed every bit of experience and most of my tools!!! I had many hours invested in that stock and many more hours of frustration. It shouldn't have been that difficult. I have done several Boyds stocks in the past and have never had an issue. For me it was a lesson learned with Richards.

I have purchased a few boyds finished stocks and many blanks. I also use their 1/2“ pads on my sporter style stock builds. They are great people to deal with, with fast service. The only mods I did to a finished stock was rounding the edges of the grip area an a At One Ruger am predator stock and also added some extra wood on the adjustable butt pad, so it didn’t have hang out so far.

Richard's Maybe Fit is a good name for them. I bought a laminated stock from them for my Savage 93R17.The color was nowhere near what their poor pictures on their website showed but I thought I'll keep it. Then it took a LOT of work to get the action/rifle to fit into it, not to mention how rough the inletting was. Finally got that done & then tackled the outside of the stock - it required hours of sanding, starting with 100 grit cuz it was so bad, lots of chatter marks, etc. and like someone else said the reach to the trigger was way too long. Luckily it's a thumbhole stock so I ground a lot of wood from the front of the thumbhole so I didn't have so far to reach to the trigger. And the description said this stock was 96% complete, would require very little sanding! NOT!!!! after that I tried staining it to try & get a color I could live with. I had already read that laminated stocks don't take stain well & that's right. Finally got it so I can use it, or so I thought. After I installed the action I took it to the range to shoot it & when I came home & started cleaning it I realized I couldn't take the bolt out cuz the cheek rest is too high!. I never thought about that when I picked this stock as this the first aftermarket stock I've bought for a bolt action. My other rimfires are 10/22's with Boyd's stocks ( these fit very well) or one I got from Larry Jennings ,which is a beautiful stock. Larry is a very talented guy!. I called Larry for some advice & he pointed me in the right direction, he suggested I grind/sand some of the front of the cheek rest off till I could remove the bolt. That did the trick, thanks again Larry! This stock was supposed to be a drop in fit for my rifle, I even called Richard's before I ordered it to make sure. Needless to say I'll never buy another stock from them & I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else!!!!

Just following up on lbjennings question. Just got the email that my stock shipped. So it took about 6 weeks for Richards to get my stock ready and shipped.

Thank you all for your great comments. From what I see, I think I’ll pass on the Richards route. I’m looking at a Boyd’s now. Possibly an unfinished walnut stock. I’d like to finish it in try oil.

Hi Larry,

I’m looking to possibly purchase a Boyd’s stock in unfinished walnut and give it an oil finish. Have you ever worked on one of their walnut stocks?

Thanks!

I refinished this stock last year. It’s a Ruger Am Predator. I think an unfinished stock will cost a little more than a finished one.

Super nice Larry! What kind of finish is that?

Yes, unfinished does cost more. Not sure why that is. You’d think it would be the other way around.

Hey Randy, I believe I used truoil. I did do some bedding, but the inletting was good. The At 1 is a nice setup. I did soften the edges around the grip area and added a piece of walnut in the adjustable butt. The pad hangs out a little more than I liked, with a 14” lop.
