I couldn't stand it any more, I finally got a ruger 77/17 vmbbz. I have just a few questions.

1. What scopes are you guys using on the 17 hmr? I don't mind spending the money to get a good scope, but I didn't want to get more scope than is necessary.

2. Are the ruger mounts any good? What do you recommend?

3. I would like to lighten the trigger pull. What replacement sear or sear/spring kit do you recommend? Something drop in would be nice.

4. Do bipods like the Harris scratch the stock where they attach to the sling swivel?

If these questions have already been answered, just direct me to a thread.

Thanks,
JJW

JJW,

This is how my 77/17 VBBZ is done.

1. I like good scopes also.---Bushnell 4200-8 X 32 AO

2. Ruger mounts are excellent.

3. I use Timney sears.-- they are not drop in (need to do some filing). I use the stock spring with them for a 2 to 2.5 # pull, their spring takes it down to under 2 #.

4. I have never had a bipod.

You will shoot 3/4" five shot groups at 100 yards and sometimes down to 1/2".

Have fun.

17VMBBZ

Had mine for about 4 months now, I mounted a Nikon 4.5-14X AO on it using the Ruger mounts. No problem holding 3/4" at 100 yds. I plan on free floating the barrel and possibly getting the Timney or Volquartsen trigger/sear.

Bipods

I have a Harris bipod on my Ruger VMBBZ, i've checked it for scratches and havent found any. Just make sure its done up properly and you shouldnt have a problem.
A good scope for the 17HMR is a Hawke scope from Deben in the UK! I had a Hawke Nite-Eye 6.5-20x50 it just about fits with Ruger High Mounts! nice and fine Mil-Dot reticle (illuminated on the Nite-Eyes!) Alot of scope for £135 - £150

Jeez, now I feel like the cheapskate that I am; I put a Bushnell Scopechief 6-20, from Natchez, on my .17. 'Course I would've gladly put a Bushnell 4200, Weaver GrandSlam, Zeiss, etc. on it if I could've found one cheaper. Oh, and Ruger rings are good, also is a VQ sear.

Steve,

I started with the . . . . . too-cheap . . . . . (sub$80) BSA on my .17! From there, I learned to spend MO MONEY on glass; so I went all out when Natchez ran the speshul. Now, I'll be a happy camper . . . . . at least until it fails. I do like CHEAP scopes, until they fail, then I hate 'em. Heck I thought my old Tasco Vamint/Tactical 2.5-10 mildot was hot $#!T . . . . until it failed, but that's in another thread.

I bought the same rifle about two months ago and love it. I mounted a Leupold 4.5-14X50AO and had to shim it up. I wish I had bought the 4.5-14X40 instead. In my area there are no Pdogs or gophers so I didn't think I would ever need more than 14X on the rifle.

I haven't replaced the trigger yet but plan to go with a new trigger rather than just a sear and spring.

I have never used a bipod. I use crossed sticks sometimes when squirrel hunting. I have been looking at bipods and may give one a try.

any decent scope

I think the 17hmr shoots far enough that any scope ranging from 6-18 max power would work just great.

right now Ive got a 2.8x10 simmons atec on my 77/17 44mm non adjustable objective, fits nice. but its not my style for a varmint caliber. so im saveing for either a 4-12x40leo vxII milldot 0r 6-18vxII same cross hairs. (from premier)

I had a trigger done in it,timney(suposebly) been hearing that the gunsmitth is saying he puts timney triggers in but there not realy timneys, guess thats besides the point cause it breaks at crisp 2lbs.

my harris bipod diesnt scratch the stock.

ive seen those target 77/17s shoot dime size groups at 100.
