Preferring Tippmanns over 10/22's?

A comment in another thread stated that the poster had gotten away from 10/22's to shooting Tippmanns. Hadn't thought about this until recently, but over time I've whittled down my stable of 10/22's which I've had for many years, to the point that all I have left is a Kidd supergrade build. And as excellent as that rifle still is esp for accuracy, I've gotten to where I have two preferred .22lr long gun platforms (while the Kidd only rarely is brought to the range--I know, a crying shame and a waste of a great rifle to leave it in the safe):

  • Semiauto: Tippmann for everything, from plinking to longer range to training for my AR's.
  • Precision: bolt guns. Either my Tikka T1x or Vudoo.

So here's the Q: In no way to knock the venerable 10/22 rifle and clones, but is anyone else liking the Tippmann M4-22 more these days? And if so, why do you prefer it?

I like my Tippmann, A LOT, but it doesn't replace any of my Kidd 10/22 rifles.

I like my Tippmann, a LOT, and it gets used just like you describe:
plinking, longer range semi work (vs the CZ bolt rifle, in that duty), and as a very credible stand-in for a centerfire.

It even makes the same 'sproinng' sound. Weight, balance, size, manual-of-arms, magazine shape and size, attachments and furniture, it's all there. And, not plastic.

Wish I had more free time, it'd be out with me weekly at least. It eats everything, never complains, and when fed nice food can keep small groups at even 200 yards. Oh, I have plenty of other rimfire gear, see my screen name? ;-) but this one is just fun.

Like you said the last of my 10/22 left a while back . I now have Bergara ,CZ , Suhl & Weihrauch hw660m and some of them more than one . With 1 Tippmann m4 Elite. As you can see all but one are bolt action. I don`t bring my M4 out that much. Waiting for a Tippmann to make a bolt action.

I've noticed at the last couple Appleseed events that Tippmanns are making inroads, especially amongst some of the better shooters.

It used to be 90% 10/22s and maybe a couple different rifles.

The last two I went to were between ⅓ and ½ Tippmann rifles, a random rifle or two and the rest 10/22s.

I think the huge rise in popularity over the past 10 years of the AR platform is catching up to the 22 market.

Also, though the Tippman is more expensive to purchase initially, they are less costly to modify since there are a million companies producing aftermarket products for the AR. A really good trigger costs ½ of a Kidd trigger and really that's all you NEED to do to it.

It is also a very good trainer for a more serious rifle since the manual of arms is almost identical.

I have a Tippmann Elite with an Elftman trigger, a butt stock I like and a B.A.D. lever and was cheaper to put together than my Tactical Solutions X Ring with a Kidd single stage and way cheaper than my Kidd Super Grade.

The only thing about the Tippmann I didn't like was loading their magazines with the sliding covers, but I got their speed loader to solve that issue...it works very well.

Well I went and did it...sold my Kidd supergrade, so that's the last of my 10/22's. Hopefully this doesn't end up being one of those sales that you kick yourself, 5 years later. Shortly I'll be selling all my accumulated 10/22 parts and mags.

For now, I'm enjoying my M4-22, Tikka, and Vudoo so much, I won't really have time to do any shooting with other rifles.

Also, not a showstopper issue but always an annoyance with me: for a LH shooter, the 10/22 platform has never been optimal. Yes I know you can adjust, and shoot it just fine. I've been doing that with 10/22's for probably 25 years. But I never found it optimal, and they are still not really setup to be a true ambi platform. This is one of the reasons I've gravitated more to my LH bolt guns, and the M4-22 which I have setup with an ambi charging handle and selector.

If they don't, another option would be to run a .22lr conversion kit on a rifle that you already have setup for LH/ambi controls. I considered that, but the Tippmann is such a nice setup and with a dedicated .22lr barrel, you pretty good accuracy.
