4 Appleseeds later... Cantilever mount, cantilever mount, cantilever mount, is the way to go... and get the scope as low to the action as you can...
Get your scope situated and mounted up first... then you will know if and what height style cheek riser to install...
Then, maybe even a slip on buttpad...if you still haven't gained enough forward shift of the scope...
Which mount did you end up using?

????? Are you using a 1" tube or 30mm tube for your scope.????? Probably need to backup for a moment at this point... Have you picked the scope to mount on you Appleseed shooter.????
Picking the right scope is terribly important... Your eyes need to see the reticle extremely well and clealy.???? Make sure you buy and install a scope with enough zoom power and a parallax adjustment on it...

1st time I shot... had no idea on how much was lost on scope crowding in the prone position and my hunter built 10/22 with a fixed 4 power was totally inadequate for the job...great for up to 50 yard hunting tree rats, impossible, with my old eyes, to see the AQT targets...

My latest iteration, and no longer using a 10/22 platform, is a 30mm scope tube, 3-15 power, mounted in a UTG Pro 30mm low cantilever mount... HTH...YMMV... and these are just my 2 cent opinions here.!!!!

I have two scopes sitting on my shelf that I was going to use for my first AS and then go from there to see if I needed to purchase something different. First scope is a Nikon BDC 3-9x40 (No parallax adjustment and 1" tube). Second scope is a Leupold 3-9x40 (I need to check the specific model, but also no parallax adjustment). I'll test these two scopes out with what I currently have to see if it'll work for my first event.

I find too much zoom just makes the standing phase feel wobbly.
Agreed.

I use a 4-7x32 Hawke with AO on the 10/22. I dialed it in for 25 meters and decided not to run it at 7 power standing for that reason. UTG Picatinny rail section with a cheap Monstrum lightweight cantilever.

Favorite sling for standing and for seated:

Does that work like a ching sling?

Your scopes should be plenty as long as you can see the small prone targets at 25m. My eyes need the parallax adjustment. I usually shoot the standing stage and seated stage at 3x and dial to 6x for prone.

Best sling IMO for Appleseed is the one they sell at their online store. It works well, and all the instructors are very well versed in its use.

This extended rail works great.

This sling is identical to what’s sold in the Appleseed store, except that it’s black.

Use your favorite Medium height rings. I like Warne, but most of the name brands are very good. You can try low rings, but it’s likely the occular bell will touch the rail. I have one on low mounts that I can pass a business card through that gap, but just barely.

Use a COTTON sling. Nylon is slippery and it can slide around on your arm.

Kind of. Very good question!

I have both and prefer this one, especially for standing position.

See the video:

and then see this (lots of details shown here!):

I always have to remember, lots of people (most?) think slings are only for carrying the rifle.
Gosh.

For clarity: I would not recommend either of these for inexperienced shooters.
Learn to use the regular loop sling like they teach at Appleseed, first.

Even if you get a fancy pants sling later, you still need the regular one for prone.

There's a link above to get the regular one in black, a good deal IMHO, and then this source as well:

I shot 3 rifleman scores using iron sights. Then shot another one running a second 1022 scoped with a Vortex 3-9 rimfire scope.

I was an Appleseed instructor for close to 2 years.
Scope crowding.prone is definitely an issue. My scoped A rifle has a 1-1/4" long extended recoil pad on it for that very reason.

Which recoil pad did you end up using? I feel cramped with the LOP with the OEM Ruger stock.

This is my loaner rifle for first time Appleseeders I bring to a clinic. Ruger 50th anniversary sent to Randy for his full CPC tune (bolt, trigger, barrel, bolt release). Cerakoted two tone FDE and Patriot brown. Weighs in at a whopping 6.5 lbs without sling. This rifle was built to compete in CMP competition, too bad there are no CMP matches by me. Scope is a SWFA fixed MOA 6x mounted in swfa low 30mm rings. IIRC it will parallax down to 10 meters and has a decent eyebox

The two modifications for appleseed that matter most are the adjustable cheek pad (since modified to give an extra half inch of lift) and long extended pic rail scope mount by EGW. Note there is still room on the rail to move scope forward two slots. I know this is an old picture as I’m pretty sure I moved it forward another slot.

The third very convenient modification for appleseed is the Kidd mid length mag release lever. This works extremely well with two mags held together with a High tower armory mag coupler as you can grab both the mag and release with one hand and flip the mags for a very quick reload for your 2 and 8 portions of the AQT’s

For slings i do use the g.i. sling, but usually prefer to use a Magpul RLS rifleman loop sling or Magpul MS1 sling as I have found both of those easier to use than the g.i.sling. However I do recommend the g.i. sling for your first appleseed as the instructors are very good at explaining and demonstrating their use.

So updated pic with three slings I use for the 10/22. A g.i. Cotton sling attached to rifle. Great learner sling but I much prefer either the magpul RLS sling in the middle or the Magpul MS1 on the bottom. Both the magpul slings are much longer in total length and can still be attached to the rear of the rifle while in loop sling position, something the g.i. Sling cannot. Blue tape is to keep the tail of the sling in a stored state so it doesn’t get in the way.

The only downside I have found so far on the magpul RLS is when it gets wet the sling keeper will allow the webbing to double up and bind during adjustment if you are not careful. Haven’t had that problem with the MS1. You shoot in all weather at an Appleseed event, including rain and snow.

Also pictured are my mags with the high the Hi Tower Armory couplers that connect two mags at th baseplate. One is in the rifle so you can see how easy it is to grab the mag and release lever with one hand and flip for a quick reload, especially useful for the appleseed AQT requiring a mag change. Notice the arrow pointing to the front side, this also helps with mag changes and cuts down on confusion. I also like to have my mags in a black and clear setup. I load 2 rounds in the black mag and the clear has the remaining 8 rounds for the AQT target.

Also note the scope has indeed been moved forward one more slot on the rail. Having the scope far enough forward is critical for the prone position. Most everyone sets their scope up at home on a bench and never check it in prone.
