Bender - one comment I'll offer is that you should really be cautious about see-thru mounts. I've found that even with "standard-height" rings on the 10/22 Takedown I have to use a cheek weld that is slightly higher than I would ideally like. It's just a function fo the stock shape and receiver height.

I've adjusted to it, but if I had risers of some kind under that scope it would make for a really awkward hold. I'm sure some do it, but just make sure it will work for you before you get too committed to the idea.

That said, I'm one of the adopters of the UTG Bug Buster 3-9x AO scope. Very useful zoom range, adjustable objective for various ranges, good reticle, and comes complete with quick-detach rings and flip-open lens covers for about 80 bucks. Really hard to beat. You will likely need a rail strip to go with it (the UTG one is $8), since the slots on the supplied rail aren't spaced right. Otherwise, it's ready to go out of the box. No see-through, but I don't need it.

I have the same scope. I work third shift, so I haven't had a chance to even shoot my rifle with this scope yet since my free time never lines up with anyone I like to go shooting with, so I can't report on how it shoots. I really love that I don't have to take it off to put it in the bag. As Mike_TX said, you will need to get a different scope rail.

Yea, these ideas of mine are me dreaming before having the gun in hand, so everyone's experience is invaluable... Im not absolutely married to the mod list, but I do want to flesh it out with the 1st and 2nd focuses in mind, so thanks.

I'm probably about as much of a newb as you but I have a tdt and also a glenfield 22 bolt action.

Anyway, I believe the newer take downs already have the extended Mag release so you probably won't need one of those.

just got my td. my first 10/22. my second auto loader. I stole a 1.5x5 Thompson centre muzzle loader scope off my tc black diamond .50 . small scope with real good eye relief, fits good in the bag. seemed a natural on the td.. not enuf mag at extended yardage but this isn't a target gun in my hands/opinion. goin north for its first trip in a couple days. spruce grouse look out!

I've been fiddling with self made scope rails for MY TD and after several attempts I came to this conclusion:
without changing the stock iron sight it's impossible to create a scope rail low enough to be left on the receiver while using the original iron sights.
There is just not enough clearance to have the scope rings slide on the rail and miss the screw heads while still being able to properly use the stock iron sights.

If you change the stock iron sighting system with something that is a little higher you bight be able to have a crack at look trough rings or quick mount rings or some other solution that lets you use both scope and iron sight without too much hassle.

With no other rings available locally I once briefly used a set of those jacked up peep under scope rings until. Beyond their looking plum ridiculous, when trying to use the irons sights those things all but totally blot out your field of view as if watching through a tunnel hoping to spot your target as it runs past the other end.

Well, it seems that idea (perm mounted scope and usable iron sights) is out the window. I guess I will have to settle for a scope w QD rings, hopefully that maintains a decent zero... I like the reviews of the Bug Buster AO, seems solid enough for >$80 and worst case I put it on my wife's circuit judge... Of course best case is me buying another for the circuit judge, so either way looks like my wife is getting optics too!

Would still welcome input on other mods for my purposes, especially a decently priced trigger assembly, think bang for buck over just cheap.

One of the first mods you should consider IMO is the auto bolt release.

The stock release is really awkward to use, and in fact I thought at first that my rifle was defective. You have to put your finger in just the right spot and press it while pulling back on the bolt. And if you have fat fingers you will have trouble manipulating it. The auto bolt release goes in in minutes and allows you to operate the bolt by just pulling it back and releasing it - just like most other autoloaders. And it's cheap.

I put a mini red dot on mine. So far hasn't caused me any issues. Its the Sig branded one that goes for about $140ish I think.

A lot cheaper than an Aimpoint Micro. Not spending that much coin on a mini red that costs more than the gun.

UTG Bug Buster Mounting Question

I just ordered one of the UTG Bug Buster Scopes. Haven't rec'd it yet though. From what I'm reading here it seems that I will now have to buy another mounting rail. I was under the impression that it came with everything needed to mount it (I'll be mounting it on a 10/22 Davidson Tactical). Is there a problem with the rail that comes with the scope, or is it just that one isn't included? What is the part(s) that I'll need, and where are they available? Thanks everyone.

For clarity's sake since there are members learning things the tough way; scope bases with cut-outs come in two varieties, Weaver (named for the company that developed the standard) and 1913 Mil. Std. aka Picatinny.

The corresponding rings that fit these bases are not dualy interchangeable. Weaver style rings will fit both Weaver and 1913 rails while having a sloppy fit in the latter. 1913 rings' cross slots will be too wide to fit a Weaver base.

Based on the knowledge that Ruger's OEM base is of the Weaver variety, we can deduce the UTG scope comes with 1913 (picatinny) rings and you will need a 1913 base to accommodate it.

As to the original question of which scope to choose, purpose, purpose, purpose! Nearly all my rimfire rifles to this point have been dedicated to hunting, then plinking. For that reason alone I've eliminated adjustable objective (AO) scopes from my rifles. AO allows for parallax correction at multiple distances but requires focusing via knob. It's an otherwise useful feature that aids in repeatability but I find it somewhat awkward, especially for running rabbits. If hunting is not a concern, then AO is certainly worthwhile. If you do not opt for AO or "side focus", I'd recommend scopes labeled for "rimfire" which have their parallax set for closer distances.

Good point, but actually the Bug Buster packaging refers to the rings as "Picatinny/Weaver", so they will fit both. I know the pins fit the slots in the stock Ruger rail okay, but the slot spacing was a problem.

Anyone know of/have experience with or thoughts on offset iron sights for the 1022 TD? Kinda like what you see on 3-gun AR setups?

I really do want to be able to use iron sights for close up shooting without removing the optics if possible.

I recently purchased a Bug Buster for another gun but tried it out on my Ruger TD with the Williams "Ace in the hole" sight and I think it will be replacing my current scope. You have to remove the screw in diopter at the rear of the sight so there is clearance for the scope. I usually keep the rear peep in ghost ring mode with no diopter anyway.
