Newb Barrel questions

Im looking for a barrel for my first build. Trying not to exceed $400ish for the entire build and less the better. Trying to stay close to $100 for the barrel.

I wanted to go with a Bull Barrel similar to the “hogue tactical target” barrel. The particular barrel has a type of swirl going down it if you ever seen it. I think I will have to go with fluted or nonfluted as that barrel was factory proprietary as far as I know. Anyone know of vendors with similar barrels?

Im also questioning a threaded barrel. I take it regular barrels are crowned and fine and any compensator has some sort of benefit like reduction of recoil or barrel rise. And possible future can. Anyone feel I should go with a theeaded barrel for my first build?

I was looking at AR7s website at their bull barrels. Are all barrels that say “match” sufficient? Im going to use the gun for range shooting only.

Forget the others.. if you want proven accuracy go KIDD.. period. And why else would you want a barrel? .. accuracy.:bthumb::bthumb:

For most Gents the KIDD Lt. Wt. is plenty accurate.. I can't tell much if any diff. comparing the Heavy Target barrels.. I own a dozen or so KIDD's..Assorted.

If you are arstyfartsy and want to decor them it's real do-able...



The Ultra Lt's are accurate as well and cheaper...just not guaranteed 1/2MOA.. but there again for most Gents they are plenty accurate...https://www.coolguyguns.com/Ultra-Lightweight-Rifle_c_27.html

Forget this part.. "I take it regular barrels are crowned and fine and any compensator has some sort of benefit like reduction of recoil or barrel rise." - non-issue and in some cases the Comp actually deters accuracy... and Brutha there is no recoil.

The threaded option is real good on KIDD's.. barely can see it.. and IF you intend to ad a suppressor down the road it's a must.

$100 is tough. I think if that was my budget - I would contact Randy at CPC and see if he would sell you one of his rechambered factory barrels.

Next would be to post a WTB here for a take off match barrel that somebody changed because it's Tuesday..

Then shoot that while you save up the $$$ for an expensive target barrel like a Federson or Kidd...

Green mountain $106 from Rimfire Sports. Or see what Buds has in their clearance bin. And no threaded barrel . Can and tax over $400 , and you have to wear hearing protection at the range anyways. Pointless unless you hunt. And a 22 doesn’t need a compensator or flash hider. , they can and often do cause their own accuracy issues.

Semi auto barrels aren’t really match chambered , the best they usually can do is Benz chamber.

I have 3 GM barrels in use and am happy with all of them. I have a ksa barrel and it’s excellent and I have a Shilen and it’s superb. The federsons are loved by many too, as well as Kidd’s. AR 7 DuPont know , but the word AR doesn’t make me warm and fuzzy, look on eBay you matey find a take off of the Ruger for sale, then send it to CPC, they are supposed to be fine shootersafter he cuts the chamber.

Again, thanks for all the replies.

I could see myself saving for the Kidd barrel but I could also see myself buying a $100 barrel.

I will be using this at the range to likely hit steel target and punch paper here and there. Maybe shoot a squirrel one day.

I like to shoot a variety of guns so this would not be my main focus and $300-400 was my mental budget for the gun. I actually started researching this week because I was going to buy a used Ruger Tactical Target with that above barrel and a hogue stock for about $300.

But these nice barrels are tempting.

It's not clear if it's a Ruger brand barrel or if it's their house brand barrel for a Ruger. There's also no info about them.... Whose blanks? What chamber?

The trouble is that aftermarket barrels for under $100 basically are the bottom of the heap.

At least the Ruger factory barrels for that price are a known quality. Nominally they meet the same specs as the barrels that come on the rifle and Ruger puts their name on them. It may shoot well or it may need a trip to Randy....

Personally - I would look at a GM barrel. They aren't that expensive - a bit over your $100 budget and they are known good.....

Another option... Pick up a used Ruger target model. That way you would have a complete rifle that runs.... Then save up some money as you can for add-on's as you decide you want them..

You know, you can get a complete rifle from Feddersen for under $600 with one of their barrels and a Hogue stock and Ruger BX trigger group. That might be worth considering.

I think the gun I was referring to has a 16" barrel and this one is 20" but it is virtually identical.

Haha, I guess it makes sense to look for a Ruger part on their website.

I don't know if anyone ever built a Crosman Pellet gun but I'm starting to learn this is very similar.

CDNN has the stainless TARGET model for $350 something.

It has that grey laminate stock-----it is a phased ou model.
