To preface this post, I have been looking hard at getting a 22 caliber centerfire rifle for a couple of weeks now and hadn't quite decided between getting a .223 or a 22-250. I almost pulled the trigger on getting a used Remington 700 VTR .223 earlier this week but decided against it, partly because I hadn't heard positive things about the stock and partly because I thought it would be more responsible of me to wait a month or so and to be more frugal. Well, once I saw this deal today all prudence went out the window...

Here is what I got for $400.

Savage 12BVSS .223[stainless, fluted heavy barrel on a laminated stock]
Harris Bipod
Plastic hardshell case
4-16x50 Nikko Stirling Scope[decent scope though I plan on getting a Leupold VX-II]

As an added bonus, the guy gave me 100 rounds of Remington UMC 223 rounds and also 60 rounds of PMC Bronze 223.

Excellent deal, and a great rifle! Try a box of Federal Gold Match with the 69gr HPBT, I think you'll be amazed how well those rounds will shoot out of that factory barrel! My Savage will hold about an inch at 300yrds with that ammo! Its an excellent load for factory ammo!

Just a little note though I would carefully check the fast focuss eye piece on any Nikko Sterling scope as the new 4.5-14x50AO Gold Crown I brought it's very loose and flops about in the eye bell making it useless for centrefire. It seems to hold up to .22LR. Hopefully yours is good and does not have this problem. I sent two scoeps back because of thsi fault so that's three Nikko Sterlings that had the same problem to some degree or another.

I have the same rifle in both .223 and .204. The .204 has a thumbhole stock.

My .223 is extremely accurate. I've tested several factory loads and mine likes Win 55gr Ballistic Silvertips the best. I had a Vias muzzle brake installed and glad I did so. I mounted a VXIII 6.5x20x40 with the VH reticle which I can't say enough about. This has been my "go to" varmint rig since I bought it new 2-3 years ago. No prairie dog has been safe within 400 yds. To me, this is the ultimate "off the shelf" varmint rig.

IMO, Savage got it right on this model. Enjoy your new toy. It's a keeper!:bthumb:

Thanks for the compliments everyone and thanks for the ammo recommendations! This is actually the rifle I had decided on after passing on the 700 VTR, someone on this forum was selling their .223 for $600...I figured I would wait a month and if it was still around, make an offer. Well I saw this deal on another forum I frequent and my jaw dropped...this was a deal I could not pass up. I won't be able to shoot it this weekend unfortunately so hopefully next weekend!

Nice gun and I think the better choice in cartridge. I would think about the cost of a Leupold. They always come out overpriced when I compare them to other good scopes. Check out Bushnell 3200, 4200, Sightron, and others.

You got a great deal. Savage has always been know for their accuracy and the .223 is a real tack driver. Therse TONs of factory loads, loading components and data out there. If anyone says the ,223 is inacurate it's them or they're shooting a Mini-14.

I like the look of that stock, that is a beautiful gun.

I'd like to know how that Nikko Sterlings holds up as I have looked at a lot of Howa's at a nearby shop that they all have that scope on them but I am kinda leary on the scope.

Many of my friends refer to these rifles as "Salvages" but then they are upset that the $400 rig outshot their $1000 rig!!!!!

My buddy has one that I worked up a load for--shoots .3" and under at 100 yds off the bench every time provided we do our parts!!!!

And, my two cents' worth-buy as good a scope as you can afford--you won't be sorry.

I'd go with the Leupold. I love all of mine. Can't do any better in my opinion. The Bushnell Elites are nice, but lack the elevation and windage adjustments that the Leupold has. Meaning that the Bushells have about half the adjustment the Leupold has. Thats one of the things you are paying more for, along with better eye releif. They are worth it to me.

I think so too! I was sure the seller had made a typo and the whole time we were doing the transfer I was dying to ask him why he was selling it so cheap or if he knew the actual value of everything he was giving me. I kept my mouth shut though, didn't want to ruin a good thing!

223 or 22-250

Having owned both at one time I like the 223 better because of the availabilty of reloadable brass. One think that you have to watch out for is the weight of the bullet should match the twist of the barrel. Shooting the heavier bullets it a slow twist (12 or 14) will cause high pressures.
My weapon of choice is a 700 VS with a 36x Tasco scope. This set up works for me as I only shoot at the bench anymore.

I have a couple in diff flavors/cals.

Shoot soooo good. I noticed the "Big Bolt Knob". That was an add on that I got for mine. NOt sure how old yours is/if they all have that now, but it is another little perk. Very nice.

Yes, you get mo' elevation with some, maybe all Leupies BUT you also only get one leaf spring internally to push the scope against the adjustment direction you are making. I E, it may not come back to where you've moved it 100%. From following scopes since I got back into shooting after a long hiatus, the knowledgeable folks I've squeezed info from, 4/5 will go the Elite route over the VXIII's $ for $ and definitely will pass up the I's & II's. L. is riding on a name made 20 yrs ago. Side by side comps for clarity/lens quality and light gathering will usually put them down the list. Everyone's eye is a bit different for sure, but have read enough scope comps from those who can afford to buy or have more than several that really put L. to the back of the bus.

Calibers and twists? Go to Shilen's web sight and their recommendations will be right there. Just remember that if a wgt is on the "edge" of stabilization, it may shoot very well out of your friends X twist and not yours as many times the production method can vary by half an inch per foot. Don't ask me how I found this out.............!
