I was just given a single shot bolt action .22 that is marked "marathon products" and says "made in spain". The guy I got the gun from has had it in his closet for 20 years so it is fairly old. Does anybody have an idea of what model it is and when it was produced? There was a little rust on the outside of the barrel and bolt, but the chamber looked good and the rifling in the barrel looked fine as well. I took it out to shoot it this morning and fired a a couple shots. It fired , but on the first shot I noticed that the sound of the shot was low and muffled. I figured it was just a bad round, so I chambered another round and being extra careful, I fired another shot. This time, it sounded normal, but somehow it spit burning powder back at me. I dont know how it happened, being a bolt action, but it did. and obviously I wont be shooting it until I can have someone look at it. What could have happened?

According to Fjestad's Blue book, they made 2 models.
.22 First Shot - 16 1/2" barrel youth model
.22 Super Shot - 24" barrel standard size
Manufactured 1985-1987, also available in kit form

SUPER OLD post i know

I know it's a super old post here but it's the only glimmer or hope i can see.... I also received one of these guns, all is there a bit rusty but there..I even have the tiny spring that the extractor presses against but I DO NOT have the extractor... I just plan on knocking one out myself...but i don't have any idea what it should look like....I know the basic concept an look etc..I own several rim fires, but i just need a pic to go from....I've dug everywhere an can't find even a pic....hoping maybe someone on here can snap a pic of their's for me.,......

Sounds like you might have had one stuck in the barrel then fired another on top of it.

Yep... Most likely...
A low muffled shot should always be a sign to stop, remove the bolt and check for obstructions.
Or it was simply a case rupture with the second, which can be an unpleasant experience - especially if you get showered with flame/combustion gas!
Case ruptures can be a faulty/weak case that bursts/splits, or a poorly head-spaced chamber in relation to the bolt... But seems to be most often, as I have witnessed, a combination of both poor cartridge and poor quality firearm.
