Saw one at a gunshow. Asking price was $250. It looked good, no dings on the stock, and good blue for an older gun.

Question 1: are they good shooters, or can they be made into good shooters?

Question 2: This one was dovetailed for a scope. Was that original, or added subsequent to manufacture?

Question 3: Is &250 a reasonable price for this rifle?

I'd say $250 is reasonable for this rifle. Is it a T-bolt? I don't quite understand about the scope dovetail,do you mean grooved receiver?
Mossbergs had good barrels,should shoot good!:t

The 144 has come in several different versions, and an acceptable price depends on too many factors to deal with on a national level.

A very quick and dirty guide:

144: Initial model with Mossberg S130 rear sight

144LS: Same except with Lyman 57MS rear sight

144LSA: Same except with Mossberg S331 rear signt

144LSB: Same except heavier barrel

144US: GI trainer, LSB barrel, oiled birch or beech stock, Redfield 75 rear sight
