Hi All,

New to forum but I have read a lot on here in the past. I have been shooting and hunting since I was 8 years old. Now I am 40 and can't get a .22 LR sighted in and its driving me crazy.

New Model 795 out of box. Dismantled, cleaned with Hoppes, light oil and back together. Mounted my old scope and went to range.

2 different ammo's and 150 shots and couldn't get a group at 35 yds. My buddy suggested removing scope and shooting.

Took scope off and shot iron sights. Two 5 round groups and both were nearly touching holes. I thought, great just need a new scope.

Went and got a cabelas .22 specific 3-9*40 with redfield .22 bases and mounted. Back to range.

Same issue again. No grouping after another 150 rounds and 3 more types of ammo including some sub-sonic.

Just to add to frustration, I had also bought a Model 60 and put the same set up on it. My 11 year old is making one jagged hole on the bullseye at 50 yds with that gun and same scope/base set up.(which I also sighted in that day)

My gun shop has no idea and said the set up and scope are good. Gun shop says next step is to contact Marlin.

Anyone have a clue of what is going in with this gun????

Thanks,

Brad

My guess,,,and assuming scope rings are tight,,,

If iron sights are working aok, then either the dovetails on your scope mount are loose, or, the barrel is loose (since iron sights are mounted to barrel)....

Looking forward to learning what your determine the problem to be,,,probably something simple,,,

Hand the 795 to the kid and see how he does.

If he shoots it as well as the 60, it's YOUR EYES.

Nope, next thing is to go see the Eye Doc ;)
You mentioned the magic number...40 years old.
It ain't over the hill, its a dang CLIFF!!
Perfect vision, never broke a bone until after 40.
Then broke 2 bones at 42, and required glasses to read and drive by 45.

So it ain't a bad idea to go get your eyes checked...yearly. From now on.

Good Luck :)

Update:

Spoke to Marlin yesterday at call center. Explained the situation. They said they never have issues with the Model 795. I explained that something is going on. They were not sure and the iron sights being "on" really through them off.

I asked if she wanted me to shoot some targets, label them and send them in. She said that would be good and send back with gun if not corrected.

The Plan

Go back out and shoot the current set up. Save target.

Remove scope shoot the iron sights. Save target.

Take scope off my Model 60 and install on 795 and shoot. Save target.

Vision is good to go:bthumb: Get my eyes checked yearly and are corrected to 20/15 in both eyes. But I will say the eye doc told me plan on some "readers" in the next few years then said welcome to your 40's. If thats all I need to worry about i feel like I am doing good.:D

Will update after new round of testing.

Anyone think the pressure of the scope bases could be causing a loosening of the barrel? That was one my shooting buddies theories.

Thanks,

Brad

Shoot your son's Model 60. You know thats good. If your groups are bad you know its you and not the gun. I don't wear glasses except for reading. But I notice I have to concentrate on keeping my head aligned behind some scopes and not others. Maybe your creating your own parallax problem by moving your head around shot to shot without realizing it. Or maybe your flinching from the recoil.;)

Unlikely as it's a press-fit barrel...doesn't hurt to try and wiggle it tho...

You're shooting just fine on Irons, so that's a Mount or Scope issue.

Marlin's 3/8" rail is notorious for being hard to mount stuff too...kinda surprised
they haven't already gone to the flat pre-drilled/tapped holes like
everything else these days...but anyway...

A. First you have to make sure it ain't the rail itself, which would be Marlin's problem.
So you take a micrometer and measure every half-inch all the way down the rail.
If it's all pretty much the same width across, it's fine. Go to step B.
If it is widely off, it's outta spec and then you have a couple choices...

1. DIY with a triangle file & respray with Krylon Flat Black paint.
2. Send it back to Marlin.

B. If the Rail is fine, then your scope mount may be off...so you have to check that.
We've got threads on the BEST items to use as mounts...DIP pic rails, B-square
monolithic mounts, etc...also have to add, this is not a new issue...
MANY are the mounts that work great on other rifles, that you can't get a lock
to save your life on a Marlin.
Also, use Blue Loctite on WHATEVER you put on the Marlin Rail. No Exceptions.

C. Ok, now if the Rail is fine, and the Mounts are fine, it is entirely possible you have
a bad scope. It happens too. If it's craptastic, send it back/return to Wally World, etc...

Don't forget to make sure you have a Positive Cheek Weld...same spot every shot.
Wiggling around can cause wide variations in shots, especially with a scope.

Oh, one more thing, if a Weaver TO-10 conversion rail is part of your equipment,
kindly throw it away and start over with a good rail. TO-10's are HORRID.

Had a similar issue with mine a few years ago and it was aggravating. It was the scope mount / rings. switched to this mount that clamps to the whole dovetail mount and it fixed the problem. The mounting surface on a dovetail is so small and is plastic so regular dovetail ring just dont bite well enough to keep the scope from moving even if you can tell it is. Have this mount on all my dovetails and it is rock solid.
