/\_As with all reticles, thickness is the difference. If you're shooting iron, thickness doesn't matter, paper on the other hand, you'll need to look through and find the thinnest reticle you can. Another thing to decide is do you want round dots, oval-egg shaped dots or hash marks/hash lines. My scope has round dots and are abit thick, good for hunting and plinking. I had a Falcon Menace with hash lines which were super thin. Very good for paper, not so good for hunting. Reason was the the mil-hash line reticle would disappear in a dark colored back background. As when shooting a target on a black pine tree trunk.

Now comes the turrets, do you want to miss match the turrets and reticle, as MOA turrets and mil reticle (cheapest) or use matching .1 mil turrets with mil reticle or MOA turrets with MOA reticle, you'll need a mint for matching MOA/MOA. You can reticle range find with a MIL/MIL scope without the math required for MOA scopes or at least 99.999% less math, you just add a Zero, don't make sense, but it works. You can do some cyber long range tactical reticle range finding practice (500 meters +) using MOA/MOA, MOA/MIL, MIL/MIL SFP or FFP in variable/fixed power using meters or yards ranged to the target. I prefer the MIL/MIL FFP, ranging using meter range card because no math/calculator required, can do in my head. You may want to attend the classes also available in this simulation: Shooter Ready, a free demo, saves you some $$$ and ¢.

http://www.shooterready.com/mildemo.html Click 'Stage' [A], click reticle type, click 10X, 20X SFP or 20X FFP, press space bar or click trigger to shoot!

I don't know your budget, but you may want to look at the Falcon Menace. http://swfa.com/Falcon-Menace-4-14x44-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P47408.aspx This is an outstanding, low priced, entry level tactical and is capable of most all tactical shooting you may grow into. http://www.falconoptics.com/pdf/FFP Series Manual.pdf

This is my Tactical CZ452 Varmint in a Boyds Tacticool stock. I'm using a Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical and it's a good medium priced entry level tactical scope, also.

Good luck in making your choice, I'm recommending not going cheap, you'll haft to upgrade later by doing so, in the long run or should I've said "The long shot?"

I have 3 of these and like them very much, will save you $100.00 over a bushy
http://www.hawkeoptics.com/rifle-scopes/eclipse-30-sf.html can sight in @ 50 use 2nd mill dot for 75 and 4th for 100, 100 not dead on but very close
Do you use a mil-dot reticle for hold over in Tactical Matches? Typically a mil-dot reticle is used for reticle range finding and your range card to correct for elevation and the center cross hair, not a center dot, for the firing solution.

BTW FFP type scopes are the ultimate for tactical shooting and your suggestion of an SFP adds to greater chances of error and time to the firing solution. The OP's question is about tactical shooting. I'm not knocking the Hawke, it's just not a good solution, but it is cheap!

For just a few more $ and ¢ He could buy this Japanese made tactical scope that has a reputation of taking anything you can throw at it and no battery required. Actually it's .50cal rated and has none of the SFP flaws. Can focus down to 10 meters and it's also cheap? Even has .1mil turrets, matching the mil-Dot reticle. Versus the Hawke having MOA turrets MISS MATCHED to a mil dot reticle, making you do several mathematical calculations, converting mils to moa's for a firing solution. Shooting should be simple, as should reticle range finding.

SWFA SS 10X42 mil-dot/rear parallax http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P53712.aspx $299&95¢
