I've been so set on getting a marlin 17 that I totaly forgot about the nef. I've read tons of reviews about the marlin and almost none on the nef. Does anyone have a the nef 17, and is it worth a darn?

I've got the nef and I really like it.I've had no problems with it whatsoever. If your looking for a no frills, mean looking little rifle I'd give one a try.Mine shoots 1"groups at 100 with a 7lb. trigger. There are some guys that are reporting unbelievable accuracy with some of the more expensive bolt guns and custom guns but for about $170 bucks you can get a good shooter and it won't be the end of the world if you put a few scratches on it.

A friend of mine has a nef and isn't pleased with it at all. He had to get the barrel recrowned before it would shoot 3/4 to 1inch at 100yrds, before he had this done 1 1/2 at 100yrds. I have the marlin and it shoots 3/4 inch groups consistantly at 100yrds. I'd go with the marlin.

Thanks for your inputs, I will definately go with the marlin. I have heard nothing but good reviews on the marlin, although nobody seems to like the trigger pull. I don't think the trigger will bother me much, I'll get used to it or get a trigger job.

I don't know the price of the Marlin but one of the posts above said the NEF shot 1-1/2 inch groups before the recrown and sub one inch groups after. This is great accuracy for a $170 gun! I am shocked as I always thought NEF's were junque. I am not saying the Marlin isn't better but the price/accuracy ratio of the NEF is suprisingly good.

Of course, you could get a Marlin 17V for around $190 and not have to do anything to it. :D

How much did the re-crowning job cost? I've never had to have one re-done, so I don't even know if my gunsmith will do it.

Almost all rifles are great shooters with the little .17HMR.

Great little round!!! :D
