I'm considering a Mark II LV or FV for informal paper-punching, etc. I also enjoy shooting small targets (.380/9mm pistol cases, old foam ear plugs...whatever I can pick up on the range) from about 80 yds.--the max. distance at our local pistol range. Also have some one-inch spinners. Just wondering what kind of accuracy to expect from the heavy barrel? I saw on Savage Arms' WebSite that both these models come with the barrel floated--as well as all their bolt actions and semi-auto's. Seems they are very accuracy-minded...... I've read that the Mark II triggers are pretty stiff, but if the accuracy is there a Rifle Basix Trigger is not that expensive...and I do love adjustable triggers! Actually that's one of the reasons I'm considering a Savage. Having owned a couple of their center-fire models, I know they are plenty accurate...I'm just not familiar with the rimfires. I would really appreciate some information...and opinions.

Mark II

Hey Aresee, they are very accurate!. I own an LV model and all my shots at 50 yards are touching each other with their preferred brand of ammo: Federal Gold Medall #711 (high velocity). At 100 yards easily you could hits eggs, too. I only use it for plinking and informal rat shooting so I don´t know yet their "competitor attitude" in matches with Eley or Lapua ammo.
The trigger is some creepy but still good to me.

Good Luck!

Hey south308

I really appreciate the feedback. And of course, you told me exactly what I wanted to hear! I should have known that it would shoot well...never heard of a Savage bolt action that didn't...... Besides, I really like the looks of the LV. I'm sold on the idea of the Rifle Basix trigger--I much prefer to just drop one in than do all the action work. Glad you like yours so well. Now I just have to find someone to order me one. Got a dealer friend who's supposed to be checking around for one already. May have to go the FFL to FFL route, but it's a little bit of a hassle. If you get the chance to do some serious bench work I would certainly like to hear the results. I'll do likewise if I'm able to find one. Thanks again.

south308...got one on the way!

My dealer friend found one yesterday and ordered it for me...should get it early next wk. Also ordered a Rifle Basix sear for it, and it should arrive about the same time. And they have already increased in price at Brownell's...from $70 to $85. Think the factory still sells them for the original $80 or so. I don't think that's too high for a 10-24 oz. trigger...the factory guy I talked with said they shoot best at eight or nine...... I'll post how the rifle checks out when I get around to shooting it. Thanks again.

aresee,

you are gonna like that new purchase, i did. i started really looking hard at that gun and when i start doing that it's usually a done deal.SOLD. i know this sounds bad but i bought it mainly cause i liked the stock. my smile got even bigger after i shot it. the lv was my first savage. since that i have bought two more, a 93 fv and a 12bvss, and i am well pleased with their accuracy. my lv is a great shooter i have scored a 249/9x on the "star 25 yard challenge target", a feat i have not matched with any other rimfire. i would have to be jobless and on the verge of starvation to sell that gun. a machinist friend helped me with the trigger. it is not as light as my cz but it'll do on the bench. had some feeding problems when it was new, but a little adjustment on the clip solved that.
my dad keeps saying" you're a big savage guy now aren't you?" and i keep saying "yeah i am". maybe someone from savage will read this and they'll send me a new gun in a caliber i don't yet own....... nahh, wishfull thinking. good luck and keep us posted,

brian

Hey Brian

I'm sure I will like the LV...I should get it by Tue. at the latest--heavy stocks and barrels really appeal to me. I'm happy that you are so pleased with yours, and that it shoots so well. Very impressive score indeed! Hope mine shoots as well...... As Savage shooters, we seem to be a minority around here--but perhaps there are others who just don't post. I've owned several centerfires that shot very well, so I figured the rimfires would too.

From what I read on some of the other forums, the ONLY problem with Savage is the trigger. And Rifle Basix can fix that one--from what I've read about them, they are great. And probably a good investment if the rifle is a keeper. Think they're all less than $100.

My next rifle (after the LV) will likely be a CZ rimfire...I've really been into rimfire lately--it runs in cycles between that and centerfire...... And I've actually thought about saving up and getting a custom benchrest rimfire...like a Turbo or Suhl, or Perhaps an Anschutz, but I think I would rather have several to rotate on the range.
Anyhow, I appreciate hearing your success story with your LV, which makes me even more eager to get mine. Later.

Good...No, Great News!

Got my MarkII LV today...and the Rifle Basix sear. And the little rifle really shoots! But the trigger doesn't yet feel exactly the way I would like...have to do some more adjusting--estimate it at about 14 ozs. now with just a little creep. Or just get used to it the way it is probably what I should do...read on......

After picking everything up, installing the sear, and mounting the scope (8-32x50 A/O BSA Contender), it was getting late...less than an hour before dark. But I only live about five minutes from the range, and I just had to shoot it today. After getting on the paper at 25 yds., the rifle shot some really small groups, so I decided to try it at 100...especially since I've had so many scope problems lately at that distance.

Took three shots to adjust close to center, and the last two went into 3/8" with the third. Shot another group and all five were inside 7/8", and three were inside 1/4". It was almost dark and I wanted to shoot a clean target at 25 yds. to show everyone. Put all five inside 1/4"...... And I'm measuring groups from outside to outside of the fartherest holes. All groups were shot with Aguila SE Subsonic 40-gr. lead solids.

Guess I may wait a while now about getting anything else...I was planning to pick up a CZ 452 and/or a Marlin 880SQ in the near future, but right now I'm having too much fun with the Savage. Looking forward to getting it back on the range tomorrow. Thanks again guys for steering me in the right direction. Later.

I picked me up a Mark II LV today. Over all I like the rifle a lot, I shot some ammo I had at the house through it and @ 50yrds all I can say is it must not like what I put through it or the barrel needs some rounds throught it to break it in. What ammo are you folks finding the Mark II likes. Before I go buying I'd like to see what you are finding good groups with. One thing I noticed tearing it apart to see the inner workings was that there is only one lug bolt that hold the action in the stock, that kinda struck me as strange.

Talk @ ya later

tom,
my mark ll lv likes wolf matck target, then again all of my rimfires like it. i had my savage before i discovered wolf ammo. i tried alot of mid priced target ammo and rws target shot the best. but it can't hold a match to the wmt. it is that good. for the price i don't think you will find anything that will out shoot it. if you don't have any, do yourself a favor and save your money that you would spend on other test ammo and by a couple bricks. just curious, what have you tried in it so far?
good luk and let us know how you make out, brian

I have only put some stuff I had here at the house.

Rem Green/Yellow box solid point
Rem Green/Yellow bow hollow point
Rem Target Green/Blue box
PMC Target
and some Federal, not sure what type

I think some of my problems may be the awkward shooting position that I am shooting from, it tends to bring parallax into the equation which does not help your groups.

tom,
are you shooting off a solid bench with a rest? what kind of scope are you using? you probably won't see the full potential of your rifle unless you are shooting from a good solid rest. i personally never seen too many good results from any kind of remington ammo.
where is couldersport (sp?), Pa? iam from south central Pa. ten miles south of gettysburg. do you have access to any wolf match target? the stuff is pretty hard to get. everyone is always looking for it.
what do you think of the new antler restrictions here in pa? i have seen some legal shooters while out hog hunting but that don't mean i'll see them come season.
take care, brian

I have the standard light Barrel MKII. When I got it the free floating barrel did not. I wrapped sandpaper around a dowel and opened up the channel, tinkered with the Trigger.
And tried several loads at 50YDS. 3/4 was the best it would do with Remington Thunderbolts and Golden. Wincheste T22 was right ther too. Ely Club was no better than Thunderbolt.
Was at the Pit yesterday and it was going all vertical stringing.
I looseded the stock bolt then tightened it up.
Three rounds aof Golden(They are crap) went into 1/2".
A friend threw 3 Wolf MT on the bench and said try these.
First one was perfect, second went a little right and third just opened up second hole 1/4" Dash on the paper at 50 yds.

Gotta get some of those!
CCI Mini Mags went about 3/8" so thats my Hunting load till I can get some MT.
I have a Simmons 3X9 40MM 8Point on it. Am hot sold on AO on Hunting rifles.

I have less than $150 in Rifle & Scope and could not be more pleased. Still not satisfied with the trigger yet.

Coudersport is up in Potter county about North Centeral PA. As for the antler restrictions I kinda have mixed emotions about it we will see how the season goes and then ask me again. I had an 8 point standing in the drive way eating acorns the other day, hope he's there come Oct 5 I can fill my tag from the kitchen table. Got me some on the Wolf M/T on order but tonight I set up a little more solid rest and one that was a lot more suitable to getting in to a solid position and was knocking 22 cases off of upside down 9mm caese @ about 45-50yrds. I was tickled to say the least, my brother sat down and knocked 3 off with 4 shots, he is heading to the shop tomorrow to pick him up a Mark II. I have mine topped with a Nikon 2x7. It looks like the more I shoot it the better it seems to get. So far I am happy.
