I've heard some people use plastic weedeater string to make a cleaning "rod". I'd like to do that, but how do you attach the patchholder and brushes to the string?

It's a "pull-through" . The weedeater line model doesn't use a brush. The patch holder is merely a bulbous end made by heating the line. You can make one yourself by heating the end of the line and forming a small ball while still hot. Or by forming the hot end in an empty .22 shell.

the otis pull through system uses a vinyl covered braided cable that has permanently attached ends fitted for a patch and for the brushes that come with the kit in a handy carry case, and is meant to fit both .22 and .17. i like this kit. check out them
all and you decide. the weed whacker is free tho' made a couple and the patch kept coming off. probably didn't do the end correctly, but is only for patches.
