Im working on building a plinker,hunting,carry 10/22. Something I can bang around with and not worry about.
Alot of target barrels require more care than the factory. They can be alittle more heavy and sensitive too.
I wanted to know what aftermarket barrels are tough,light, dont need frequent cleaning, and can handle a variety of ammo styles?
I dont have high accuracy expectations. Just something better than the factory barrel.

Ive tossed my 10/22T around, its slide doen a rocky mount slope knocked of my truck. dropped in the mud. drug threw the brush. layed in the snow. almost anything you name it.

the only thing Ive ever done is run bore snake through it every so often and re zero the scope cause it never holds under tha abuse.

Im getn a GM barrel 16.5" flutted blued barrel. this barrel will see the same abuse. not intenaly but I know it will see it.

Does Green Mountan barrels have a tight fiting chamber that need alot of cleaning? So the spent shell casing can be extracted...?

Yes, they have Bentz chambers (tighter match chambers).
The best low maintenance barrel in my opinion would be a factory stainless barrel.
It's light and will feed and eject anything.
If your scope breaks you still have open sights too.

I did the break in process with a hundred rounds, cleaneing between every 10rds.

after that id shoot 20 or so then clean, did that few times then got lazy, cleanerd after 3-4 mags had been through it.

even with my lazy cleaning it chamberd and extracted the spents rounds just as well or better than the 10/22T barrel.

it stove piped ounce and failed to feed a round a few times cause the mag wasnt letn em feed up high enough.

Nice! Glad it shoot for ya, I knew it would! I remember seeing threads on how you had feeding problems before.. Im realy glad there gone! I just got a Choate stock today. but if I get a bull barrel Im probly have to go with a Hogue or something of the like.

Im so glad i stayed away from the houge and butler creek barrels, theres a couple sporting goods stores in the area with them in stock, everytime i saw them I had to fight the urge to get one. this gm fluted is just more my style.

Im am amazed at how much better this barrel shoots and cycles ammo compared to the ruger barrel, i think my only jams are cause of sticky mags.

I shot quite a few ground squrels today, 10-90yds, the 90yd shots amazed me, with the standing squrel I hel on there head, hit em in the chest and they didnt move. I wonder if velocty is up enough to shoot that much flatter. and thats with cheap american eagle ammo, made by federal. it wasnt just a couple 80-90 yard shots, where talkn a town with 20 pigs standing, no less then 8 on the ground when I was done

Gregarat,

Everything you listed as a requirement reads RUGER FACTORY BARREL! You can get a new barrel, band and stock for next to nothing on eBay. Why spend more for something you don't want? Up grade your trigger it will improve your accuracy.

the trigger has alot to due with acuracy,

if your only lookn for better acuracy then Id start there. then go on to other stuff.

Yup, I already got a trigger kit last week. The PatchWorm too. (I bought a Sinclair muzzleguard when I got the rifle. It did not line up the rod with the muzzle to keep the tip of the jag away from the crown. Isnt that supose to be the point of the stinkin thing? The PatchWorm is far better.) I just today recived my Choate pistolgrip fixed stock. My buffer pin comes tomorow.
I guess I should'nt gripe too much about the accuracy. Im shure its acurate enough for plinking, and up to 50y hunting. Who knows mabe it will shoot beter with lower velocity ammo. The stock may help abit too. I dont have my hopes up to high on that.

My problem is solved. Of corse it was my stupid fault. I was using a centerfire rifle scope. I thought that a +/-.5" parrelex error wasnt that big of a deal. That has to be on the list of "My top 10 dumb ideas". Anyhow, after I faced the facts. I got a Tasco Varmint/Tactical.
Now my grps are around 1"-.75" with a flyer or three using Blazers. Using Federal "Classic" I was shooting the same grps with less flyers. I only shot three groups of ten each, at 59y. I hope to do better with low vel target ammo.
Also, I pray this Tasco scope holds its zero. So far, im impressed with this cheap scope.

ive always heard rimfire scopes or have the paralax readjusted. but to tell you the truth ive never looked through a scope that was desinged for rimfires and I dont plan to. every scope Ive had on my 10/22 I could comfortably take and put on my centerfires. maybe I could see an improvement to ??

BigMike has a sticky thread on the scope&ring forum that sums up parallax nicely. You dont realy need the scope to be for rimfire, if it is an AO adjustible scope. Mabe even a shotgun scope will work, if its focus is at 75y. I think the problem with a shotgun might be that, it has thick crosshairs.
