Know of a good Target Scoring App for your phone?

1372 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  FritzFulton
A search of these forums came up with a couple of mentions of apps that were way out of date. so...

Is anyone using a group measuring app they like?

A typical day at the range doing ammo testing nets me 25 to 50 five shot groups to measure. That's one or two cards. They're official 25 bull IBS rf 50yard and NRA-23/6

I use Ballistic X and like it. It's about $7 or so for android on the play store.

It works well, easy enough to use if you are just measuring groups. You do have to enter each bullet hole.

It does not score targets though if that's what you are after.

I use 'Range Buddy', well, actually I think measuring the old fashioned way is more accurate. I think it matters on the resolution of your android device as they measure by counting pixels.
Thanks
I'm not after target scoring. I mentioned the targets because one of the apps I noticed has a list of them to select from.

How do you enter each bullet hole when it's a one hole group?
I like Ballistic-X as a tool for group sizes.
If it was me I would get a portable scanner like this. Scan them at the range and be able to have a copy and use a desktop program. you can find them on ebay pretty cheap.

When you go to mark the holes on your target, there is a cross hair and circle that corresponds to the caliber you are shooting.

You can zoom on the picture to get an accurate alignment of the circle/crossbar to the bullet hole. Even in one hole groups, there is a rounded edge from each bullet hole on the outside edge of the groups. Just line those up with the circle.

Say you do a 50 round group testing ammo lots, as long as you have the outside edges of the group marked it will calculate the size.

For 10 round groups, I may only need to mark 6 or 7 bullet hole to cover the entire perimeter of the group and it will calculate the group size.

This is a target I scored for a friend who was comparing cheap ammo performance at 100 yds. He shot the while box of 50 at the same POA, but I only entered the far outside shots to calculate the group size for him.

Hope this helps.

Is there a statistic computed by the app that averages the distance of all rounds from the center of the group?

Since the app is working out sight adjustment it obviously has figured out the group center.

thanks for the quick response, btw
I have the app on my iPhone and iPad, take a photo, denote a fixed 1 inch distance on the photo, follow the prompts that include target distance, POA, and mark each impact type in label info. Not too hard at all, I believe the app was $7.

With BallisticX i think the reference has to be one inch. With rangebuddy it just has to be a known reference which you input. I like BallisticX output better, but I like Rangebuddy input a bit better. It is why before taking the picture of the target with my phone I slap a 1inch target sticker on it...like this

I use Ballistic X and I print targets from here and other places. To give myself a 1 inch reference I just put 2 dots with a Sharpie one inch apart.

Then I photocopy the target with my 1 inch reference.

AFAIK, Ballistic-X doesn't do multiple groups on one target - you'd have to take separate images, or start over for each.

The picture originally posted is from On-Target Precision Calculator. There used to be a free version (v 1.x) and the 2.x version had more features and was pay-only (free trial period, though). It is Windows only, no love for Mac/Linux/Chromebooks.

There are some other apps out there like RangeBuddy/SubMOA, etc. that do have some more features beyond Ballistic-X, but doing detailed analysis of more than one group on a smart phone is kind of a PITA, to be honest. As far as web apps, Taran is not terrible.

If you really want to get your geek on, there is always shotGroups...

Personally I prefer doing it directly on my ShotMarker e-target when I can, but I wish it had a few more bells-n-whistles as far as the group analysis goes, but then again, one can always export the data to shotGroups

Does not have to be 1inch, mike the width of the target or the cross arm.

To get definitive holes use card stock, not paper. I use 110# index or card stock, available from Sam’s Club.
Splatter targets are not useful for group measurements.

Also be sure the backer, is clean with no holes behind the bull you are shooting at. Give a much cleaner hole to measure. Ditto on using heavier card target stock in stead of flimsy paper.

Here is my favorite target, print in black and white so that the faint blue lines appear black which is
much easier to see.
