What are you referring to Todd?

Are you wanting just to own some Class III stuff, or are you wanting to become an FFL dealer that can deal in Class III?

If you are just wanting to OWN some of this stuff, you don't need to get a "Class III" License. THIS is if you live in one of the 35 C-3 friendly states. There is an AWFUL lot of information, and unfortuantely, misinformation out there. BigMike gave you an excellent resource if you are looking to become a dealer. However, just for owndership, you file one of two types of forms. A Form 1, or a Form 4, Depending on what you want to do.

Form 1's are only good if you want to actually MAKE your NFA item. Such as a Short Barreled Rifle, Short Barreled Shotgun, Any Other Weapon, Suppressor, or in SOME areas, Destructive Device. These ALL STILL have the $200 federal tax.

Form 4's are for a Tax Paid Transfer to you from a dealer. Essentially it's the same process as a Form 1. 2 passport photo's, 2 complete FBI type fingerprint cards, $200 check, and a Chief Law Enforcement Officer putting his/her signature on it.

I could type several pages on this and still have more to go. That's the very basic stuff. Tell us what you are wanting to do, and we can be of more help :D

Here are a couple helpful links.

Hope this helps!

BigMike & GAU-2.

Thanks for the information on the subject.

GAU, In the future (once I am past 21) I would like to try my hand at owning a suppressor or maybe an AOW/SBS/SBR. I don't think that I would want to have a license to make one, but you never know.

But you guys must know from expirence that there is just something in shooting NFA guns that can't be found in shooting normal firearms.

How much of a hassle is it to obtain a permit to posess these items?

Permits????

We don't need no stinkin permits! :D When your Form 1 or Form 4 comes back approved, you will find this funky green stamp on the top right of the page. THAT is what you paid $200 and waited several months for! THAT little devil, along with the form are what "registers" the item in your name, and allows you to posess said item. Smart people DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT keep the original forms with their firearms! They make like 6 copies of them, and sometimes a couple "miniatures" to keep on your person when shooting. They stash the originals in a REALLY safe place. Essentially the proof is in the paperwork :) There are SOME states and localles that require "state registration" of some items. none come to mind off the top of my head, but they are out there. surf around subguns.com and I'm sure you'll be able to find answers to any of your questions That we can't answer!

Sincerely,

Well... Your question raises a couple more

1. Is the rifle semi auto, If yes, is it preban? This is only relivant in relation to semi autos that might be regulated by the '94 ban.

2. What size/pitch thread are you wanting? Most .22lr suppressors out there are threaded to 1/2x28 Some are 1/2x32 and still yet some are 3/8x??? I forget the TPI on that one  . ANYWAY... If you are wanting it for a suppressor, extra care must be taken to ensure concentricity to the bore. Granted, most any yahoo can get them "close".... But do you want your $200 tax stamp plus whatever you paid/put into the can to be only "close"?????

So spit it out already! If you can pull the barrel, and not be in violation of local/state/federal law. it's simple :)

Sincerely,

Thanks GAU-2

I am not looking to thread a barrel, I was just wondering how it was done on the Walther P-22, I wasn't sure if they bought a whole new barrel or simply had a thread extension put on the end.

But once I do get a legally obtained suppressor down the road then I wouldn't mind having one on my bolt-actio .22 mag or if I had a .22 pistol by then, then I would like to have one on that.

Thanks.

Okay, now taking this to the next level...

I have looked through those links but I am still lost. Evidently, I need someone to hold my hand. I know about acquiring individual weapons and suppressors, but I want to know what would be the requirements to become a Class III dealer.
