Just got a new BMR, a question for owners

a question for BMR owners

How many rounds did it take to break in your BMR? I shot appx 250 - 275 rounds this afternoon between sight in and ammo testing. 10 different types of ammo from Tac 22 and CCI Std velocity through Lapua Midas + and Center X. Three different types of SK were tried along with Eley Match, Eley Team and Wolf match. I cleaned the rifle when switching ammo brands and 50 yard groups were sporadic at best and after 30 groups none were bragging material. The scope came off another benchrest rifle and I checked everthing for tightness. I have a 2200 average in ARA competition and shoot over wind flags so I don't think all of those flyers could have been me. Also the bolt is very stiff and rough as a corn cob to cycle. I am hoping a few more rounds and perhaps a tweaking of the action screw torques will straighten it or my son in law will have gained another plinker for his collection. I watched a lot of videos and read a ton of reviews before purchase and so far at least it is not living up to expectations. Maybe I just did not win the lottery on this one.

Any suggestions are welcome

Mine was nice out of the box
Smooth accurate and nothing I wanted to change but the pull weight on the trigger.
Did the trigger hack that is described here on RFC.

Mine shoots and happily it likes TAC-22
suppose i could feed it more expensive ammo but not my thing with 22's
Target is from practice 12/22

Last mini palma match in oct 22
800-100 900-100 100 98
shot 2 shots high at 1000 yd target but still in a 3/4" group at 100 yds

Wind runs in cycles, I pick the what seems to be prominent one and zero the scope to that condition. I try not to shade unless time is running out. My last match I was running the clock down to the 2 -3 minute mark on those last few shots but my patience paid off, Yesterday I was practicing in 10 - 15 mph switching winds yesterday. Had some knotholes and also a few crap groups but that is why they call it practice. My main range gets a constantly switching coastal wind and the other has a strong left to right crosswind which I prefer because it is a lot more predictable.
Well good luck to you this year. And I hope Bergara takes good care of you

thanks, so far so good this year, but there is a long way to go. It only take a couple of wrong wind calls or flyers to go from hero to zero. As far as the BMR it was delivered yesterday. I am hoping for a good outcome

Would like to see some after pics as well
of course I will be doing a new ammo workup and barrel seasoning. The I will either shoot some groups or ARA factory targets scan them and tack them onto this thread. In my correspondence with Bergara I asked them to take their time and make it right so I am not expecting it back before the end of the month. I am confident that when I get it back it will shoot as well as a BMR is capable of shooting. I have a friend who is doing pretty good in ARA factory with his BMR + another who is doing fairly well with a modded out B14 in ARA unlimited so I know these rifles are capable of shooting well. I just got a lemon, it happens, as long as they make it right it's all good
The BMR made it home today. exactly 30 days after I dropped it off at the UPS store. Kudo's to Bergara on the service time. According to the paperwork they enclosed they had smoothed the engraving and replaced the extractor then range tested it with SK high Velocity with groups of .523, 518, and 615. The bolt cycling is much smoother than it was, on par with my CZ 457. The extractor is in place and if those groups were 5 shots at 50 and can be duplicated consistently I will be a happy camper. Tomorrow was a scheduled range day anyway so I will pop a scope on it and give it a test at the same time and update this thread by Friday.

What is the “engraving” being referred to? Curious mind wants to know. Thanks.

I am assuming the lettering on the bottom of the bolt

Just got back from the range. I have to give the rifle a F on function, at least one to two rounds out of every five failed to eject

F on accuracy also - I tried CCI SV, SK Std Vel, SK PMS, and Eley Match average group size at 50 yards was a inch and a half. I will pulling the scope reboxing it and putting in a corner of my attic. Let the grandkids deal with it when I am gone. I have a old Marlin 60 that functions better and is more accurate. Maybe I just got a lemon but it is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent on a rifle
JimSC - i was wondering that if they, apparently, didn’t address anything related to accuracy, why would we expect group size would shrink. But at least they did something else to your rifle other than just test fire and ship it back — like mine.

Sorry for the disappointment, i do share the same sucky feeling for you. Better luck next time, if there is a next time

JimSC - Just to recap: i expressed my displeasure of how sucky my BMR shoots, and questioned them about their MOA guarantee — even THEIR tests failed to hold MOA. They voluntarily offered me to return for full refund. And I did.

May be you want your money back for the lemon.

WAIT!!! Did they put my lemon back into circulation????

I have a feeling the lack of accuracy is due to the stock. They did enclose a test target with mine so I know the action/barrel is capable of good accuracy. Just a guess but they probably test fire from a fixed mount. I am working on another project right now but in a couple of weeks I will pull it down from the attic and do a simple pillar bedding and give that extractor a good exam at the same time.
I pulled the BMR down out of the attic and think I may have found the problem. There was a small piece of plastic caught in the outside edge of the right hand extractor/ejector. That could not only been affecting the ejection but also may have been preventing proper head spacing and affected the accuracy. I found the stock has pillars installed already. I may or may not do some bedding on the tang and in front of the recoil lug if it needs it.

I may make a quick range run with a box of TAC and a target after I do my yardwork
You need to stop! ;) You've gotten me to rethink throwing mine in a corner. Maybe I'll give it one last chance.

Although it didn't stop me from buying a B14R which is the absolute tack driver amongst my t1x,bmr,rpr, 4 cz's,etc

it's worth developing I think. Removing that piece of junk from the ejector solved the ejection issue. I went and pulled the target from the trash, scanned it in and there were a couple of really nice groups on it. I think that might have been a small piece of lead in the ejector blade. The continual failures to eject got me frustrated and I was shooting my 40X custom so anything larger than a .2 group looked huge. I just tested it without firing and ten of ten rounds ejected properly. I am thinking of making a quick range trip

It looks like I may owe Bergara a apology
