I have been thinking about getting a good quality RF. It would be mostly used at the range and maybe plinking once and a while. I do not hunt or Varmint shoot. I do not plan on doing any formal target shooting as there is nowehere nearby to do that.
Cost wise I probably want to stay under $500, but its not firm and I am not averse to spending less than that.
Initially I was thinking of a .22LR gun. I am now considering a .22 WMR or .17 HMR, mostly just to be able to do some longer range shooting. Also I have a .22 PCP airgun that is probaly as good as any .22LR short of a match gun so shooting at the shorter ranges is covered by that.
I went to one of the few local gun stores that has a decent selection the other day.
They had am Anschutz 1451 that seemed nice, but was only in .22LR. I really liked the trigger as it was 2 stage like some of the higher end air rifles I own. Price was $549
They has a Kmiber .22LR that was nice, but the price was $850 which is more than I want to spend.
They had a CZ 452 in .17 HMR with the short heavy barrel. Gun felt real good. Price was $399. Trigger was very creepy and moderately heavy. Wood fit on the action was tight on the right and loose on the other side (apparently very common). I have read a lot of good things on this forum about this gun.
They had an Anschutz 1517 that seemed real nice. Good trigger. Price was $649.
They also had a Ruger 77/17. Trigger was real heavy althoguh it broke with no creep. The stock did not feel that good offhand to me.
They also had a Savage that was available in Left Hand (I shoot left handed although I am really right handed). Other than being left handed it was the least impressive of the bunch.
Tops on the list are the CZ 452 and Anschutz 1517. The CZ felt the best in my hands and had some nice looking wood. The Anschutz had a nice trigger that they said was very adjustable. If money was no object I would probably have the Anschuts right now, mostly due to the trigger.
How much can the trigger on the CZ really be improved? If I paid someone to do it what is the approx cost? I have read about people sanding the stock to relieve the odd fitting wood. Is this hard and is it necessary? It seems they havea great gun here except for these two things. Why can't/don't they improve them?
I also considered a single shot like the ones from H&R, but I cannot find one locally to look at.
Any thoughts on these rfiles is greatly appreciated. Also if any body wants to chime in on the .22 WMR vs .17 HMR feel free. Is the .17 more accurate or that much flatter shooting? Anybody think the ammo prices will come down?
Thanks for your inputs.
