I got my elbow pads from the skateboard area at Sports Authority. Didn't wear them as it was cool enough to need a jacket. On top of the $40 pad from Midway, that was enough. You say $100 for the 10/22 parts? I put in a Volquartsen Bolt Release with Target Hammer kit ($45 @ Midway), Kidd Recoil Rod and spring with Bolt Handle ($30 from Kidd) and a larger magazine release ($18-$22 from Glockplates). Added a web sling from Tech Sights ($14)

That and the scope helped me get my Rifleman Patch the first day.

No restrictions on pads. You can buy the super expensive ones or even a piece of old carpet. Can you make a loop sling with the leather ones? I ask because I don't have one and don't know.
