I am looking at these two

Sinclair Heavy Varmint AP Windage Right-Hand

$379.99

http://www.sinclairintl.com/shooting-rests-bipods/shooting-rests-tops/shooting-rests/sinclair-heavy-varmint-rests-prod57001.aspx

OR THIS ONE THAT COSTS LESS

http://www.grizzly.com/products/Rest-Slingshot-Cast-Iron/BE1006

Is the Sinclair worth that much more ?

And if I could.....have opinions on both of them if you own either one.

Both are more than I want to spend and I probably don't need that good of one, but would like it to be the last one I buy in my lifetime and have something good to pass on to my Son;)

Thank You

JEFF:D

P.S. If I put this in the wrong section U Mod er Raders can move it if you want:bthumb:

I've never had a Bald Eagle rest to compare. I could guess that the Sinclair might have a little tighter tolerances thinking on comparing it to my old Caldwell BR, but it's not perfect and there are a lot nicer rests out there and a lot pricier too.

I do like their speed screw add-on... really works nicely with the windage... another $70 bucks though.

From the ad, the BE doesn't look bad... and if the windage is smooth, you won't really care if the elevation is a little rough after adding a speed screw.

By the way... you picked the right place for this thread. ;)

I just couldn't bring my self to spend that much so I ordered .....

http://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-440907-Rock-BR-Rest/dp/B000S5W78A/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1403565997&sr=1-1&keywords=Caldwell+Rock+BR+Rest

And one of these

http://www.amazon.com/Protektor-Model-Rabbit-Rear-Bottom/dp/B006MFYQ5C/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1403566147&sr=1-1&keywords=Protektor+Model+Rabbit+Ear+Rear+Bag+with+Hard+Bottom

And one of these

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030HQDMO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the rubber feet from Caldwell

Ended up costing $210.00 Total

How did I do ??????

And how about the Protector rear bag ...is that the right size for the rest.

And the Protector bag for the rest.....Good ?

I was up till 2 AM deciding on this stuff.......So I hope I got the right stuff.

The only thing I might have to get another of is the Protector rest bag ...might need a wider one for some of my guns.

Thank You All For your input before this post and look forward on hearing how I did after my orders.

That's a nice enough rest. You'll do fine with it. There's a thread here where someone tweaked some things on his. Real good ideas that you might want to try. The thing is heavy, which is good.

As for bags, depends on what rifle you're using. But the protecktor bags are nice. As you progress, you will probably end up trying other stuff that costs more, but you did fine.

Good luck

These are nice too and cheaper...

You did good. I have the Rock and recently got the Bald Eagle heavy job. It's as good as I will ever need for my purposes, but then again, so was the Rock. You will like those Protecktor bags. I know the br guys use different stuff but I don't see how that would benefit me for just informal local competition. Enjoy your new stuff.

Thanks JEE :bthumb:

NEVER...... ENDING.......SPENDING ........This IS FUN :yikes::yikes:

THIS IS IN THE WORKS TO SET ALL THIS STUFF ON.......... IT'S A LITTLE OVER HALF DONE

A BIG THANKS TO Larry Willis for his plans but his site wont load right now:mad:

This is a picture of his I think. If not thanks, his is similar.

Made a couple of changes ,but not much.

The legs won't have quite that much angle to them and it will be cut out for right or left handed shooters ( My Son is left handed......he just loves me when I buy a gun with a thumbhole stock :smashfrea )

Jeff Miller, that Caldwell will do just fine. I shot for the first 4 years with one. Get a bag of lead shot from the reloader store and after you have it set, put the bag over the front two legs. It will help bring the weight up to make it much more stable.

There is also a thread running here in this sub forum if it has not been mentioned yet, that is a tune up guide for that rest. Several things that will make it even better. I have shot as high as a 231 in an official match off one of those twice in sporter class USBR. So the rest is up to the task.... The comments about the right bags are directly to point. The front bag in the rest being quite critical. And YOUR comfort at the back end is also quite critical to shooting well.

Enjoy, that rest will last a very long time.

the caldwell is a good rest and the bottom is heavy. i see alot of
people use the bottom with a different top, i use a fudd top on mine.
i think i paid 120 including shipping for my caldwell from midsouth sp
when they had them on sale once. you did okay. i really do like the
ball bearings on the wheel. makes it very easy to move up or down.

I am very pleased with my Bald Eagle and feel its added price is well worth it over the Caldwell Rock BR.
I think I like the Bald Eagle design, too. It looks like a lot of rest for the money. I know if I had to choose between the two for competition purposes, I'd definitely want the BE. For more casual work, I am sure the Caldwell will be great and a huge improvement over sandbags. Having to reach forward to make windage corrections gets old pretty quickly.

The only downside I've come across with this rest is that the cable for windage has a tendency to need to be braced for a "slack free" feeling for windage. Usually when you turn the knob, the cable moves with in the direction of your turning for a brief moment and then the cable twists inside of the insulation. I always have an metal ammo box or a sandbag resting on the cable so that it's always braced and everything is fluid.

The slack experienced from that is no more than the slack in the windage adjustment of the Rock BR. I think it's easier to set something on the cable to fix the issue than modifying the Rock BR to be a tighter fitting rest, but I can see how someone could call it inconvenient.

Me too.
I think one has to spend a great deal more money to get a better rest.
My original, made by Gebby before he sold the business, is smoother and more precise than the new ones but I gave $250 for it over twenty years ago.

If I had my first choice for a front rest, I would be buying DR Greenlaw. He is a bit pricier than the Bald Eagle, but I would think that if the shooter needs more than a hobbyist level of precision, he would be the most frugal option.
