Feddersen nickel alloy receiver

1054 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Bigbore
I have limited production melonited Feddersen .920 that I had threaded later. It shoots pretty well out of an OEM receiver, aftermarket trigger and custom bolt in an Archangel stock. I have had my share of 1022s in many variations and this is the only one I own these days.

I am wondering what advantage I might gain if I got a Feddersen nickel alloy receiver? I realize no matter what I do this will not be an ARA unlimited benchrest gun. I am not interested in getting another stock, I have had many of those as well. And I still chuckle at the expression "tack driver" when someone extols the virtues of their .22 rifle unless it is a true custom benchrest gun ammo lot matched.

I do like to shoot at 2" saltines at 185yrds and am wondering if the heavy nickel alloy receiver might provide a smidge of something I am not currently getting.

It will look really cool.
That is exactly what I was afraid of:)

And it will make you shoot sub MOA 10 shot groups with Thunderbolts and iron sights out to 250 yards if you need more convincing. (Probably, not a guarantee)

Ahhhhh....!!!! You are killing me. OK, I'll save my money and put a better scope on one of my other .22s:)

I was just playing. I don't have any experience with Feddersen products other than the fact that they seem to be pretty universally well liked.

If your OEM receiver's tolerances fit well with what you have, there will likely be little gain by switching to any other receiver. If you are regularly hitting saltine crackers @ 185 yds, I wouldn't change a thing and buy cases of that ammo.

If you are not regularly hitting them, and you are looking for that extra edge consider upgrading the receiver. Given the fact that you're only going to have one 10/22 and you changed so many parts, why not go all the way?

The only downside with my 10/22 is that the only Ruger part on it is the magazine. I have eliminated every excuse for poor shooting and misses, except ammo and the Coreolis effect.

The one thing me and another friend have found is that there are some/many .22s that are much more accurate than a 1022 for price per accuracy. However, for tinker toy type fun there is no equal to the 1022.

Beyond being dimensionally made specifically for a Feddersen barrel, they look amazing and its slick. Feddersen did offer a TN Ridge Runner which was a standard Ruger OEM 10/22 with a Feddersen barrel in a Hogue stock and it shot 1/8" groups assuming you had the torque on the non-bedded Hogue stock tuned right. A great billet receiver gives you a solid barrel mount and integrated top pic rail that will not loosen. At least from all the years I have testing this stuff, I would say the accuracy improvements that I would make would be in order of improvement are:
  1. Barrel
  2. Pillar bedded Stock/Chassis
  3. Trigger
  4. bolt
  5. Receiver

I have the bronze/nickle and could not be happier with it. I torque the action screw to 25 inch/lb where it shoots best no problem unlike soft aluminum receivers. It's almost so slick you don't need lube.....or very little. And it looks and feels the part with a 20" heavy taper Kidd blued barrel in a Victor Titan stock.

What distance and ammunition type? Do you have a sheet of these we can admire?

Man it was a while back... let me see what I can dig up....

EDIT
from my original article
"My best group so far is a 5-shot .136” group at 50 yards with Lapua Midas ammo"

I had forgotten that was my range betting card split trick rifle since it looked pretty stock it seemed like a safe bet that i could not slick a playing card at 50-yards.

Interesting article. .136 with just a barrel change. Love the way that shatters some myths about the need to swap all the parts.

I'll swap parts just to try them, but my honest results so far lead me to believe that my coin is best left in my pocket for the most part(pun). Barrels excepted.

I may try one of those barrels.
