I've been shooting Fed Premium 30 gr Sierra .22 mag, most accurate I've found for my rifle. I just recieved an order from Mid South that said was the Sierras in the catalog, said it was Sierra on the web , and even on my invoice, however the ammo says TNT. Has any one shot this new stuff? Is it as accurate for you as the Sierra load? I'm a little peeved Mid South would sell me one thing and send me another. ----Shoot Safe----montdoug

Ammo makers like everyone else watch the bottom line. I imagine they got a better price from Speer for the TNT's over the Sierra bullet. I've shot CCI TNT's in my 597 and it really liked them. Hope those Federals shoot as well as the Sierra tipped ones in your rifle.

Midsouth seemed genuinely sorry about the mistake, said they'd sell me the stuff for $4.00 a box. I still think they should be paying attention to such details, but I guess we all make mistakes. They have always been good folks to deal with, and they tried to make it right. They are still on my -A- list, I only wish they could get my .17 HMR order to me. Federal on the other hand ticks me off, cause I'm sure your right Mike TNTs cost less than Sierras, at least they do in reloading bullets.----Shoot Safe---montdoug

Federal

I can't understand why Federal would change such a good thing. I really liked the Sierras I had. CCI all ready makes the TNT's. How do they expect to compete without having something that nobody else does.

I don't know.

"Bean Counters"??

Isn't CCI, Federal and Speer all owned by the same "Parent" Company, now?

I guess, they figured why should they give their business/money to a separate Company (Sierra).

I bought some Federal 30 grain .22 Mag. cartridges the other day. I'm guessing they are Sierra bullets but the box just says Federal Jacketed hollow point--30 grain. There is no mention of Sierra on the box. I haven't shot any of 'em but I'm guessing if they shoot as good as I've heard I should go back to the gun shop and stock up on 'em. I think they had sevearal boxes at the time and they don't move a lot of .22 mag. ammo since the .17's are out!! Should I buy all I can find--probably a brick or two??

O.k......

Federal kept the #P765 when they switched over to the "Speer HP", so that won't help.

Kent,

On one end of the box, (opposite side of the "bar code"), the "old" Federal Sierras will say......

--------------------------------------------------
Federal
Premium

.22
WIN. MAG

30 grain
SIERRA JHP

I'll take a pic, tomorrow, and post it.

It's late and I'm too tired, now.

Hey Ski,
is just my old eyes trickin me, or is the case on one of those rounds longer than the other ?

If this is the case (pun) ... is there likely to be a Stinger-type situation with jamming, or is the magnum chamber loose/long enough to cope ?

Thanks Ski--the ones I have have the number 767 on the lower left corner of the box--the hollow point is smaller than the larger cavity of the two in your pics--the box is red but it doesn't say Classic on it--but it probably is. So far I have not shot any of 'em. I was just thinking that if they were the Sierra load I should probably buy some more while I still could! These may shoot great--only time will tell--I'll try 'em this Saturday. I shot some 50 grains last Saturday and they surprised me--they shot almost as well as the Premiers in my CZ. Very little difference--I did not expect that heavy bullet to shoot that well--but it did shoot lower, no surprise there. Thanks for taken the time to further my education on these magnums. They are nice little cartridges that act a lot bigger than they are--I like that.

Groucho,

First, I gotta confess that those are CCI "TNT"s, I don't have any samples of the Federal "TNT"s.

However,

It's prolly just a trick of the camera angle.

I had to play with the angle to get a good shot. The "flash" kept 'blanking out" the shot.

I got the digital calipers out, after I read your post.

I was getting a difference of +/- .0005 from any of the cases (either Fed or CCI) that I measured. NOT enough to lose sleep over.

danurve,

Speer 50gr "Gold Dot" HP

Speer 30gr "TNT" HP

Very similiar, yet, different.

The cavity on the "Gold Dots" isn't nearly as deep as the "TNT"s.

And the "jacket", at the tip, was slit, pushed into the cavity and covers the lead so the hollow looks jacketed, also. Prolly, the reason for the name, it looks like a gold dot when ya look at it, head on.

On the "TNT"s the tip's jacket is also slit (like a pie) and the wedges folded inward but pressed against the inner wall and the lead is exposed.

The "slits" give both bullet's tips a "serrated" look.

"Clear as mud", eh?

Thanks guys--these 30 grains I bought look kinda like a Stinger bullet with a smaller hole--I was wondering if they were indeed jacketed or just coated. Honestly, I've never had much luck out of CCI ammo for accuracy--but it's been a long time since I tried any. It's the old once bitten thing I suspect--life's tough enough--I've always tried to NOT make the same mistake twice:) The CCI may have improved--I may be missing something? I'm gonna see if I can scrounge some Sierras from some of the small shops and try 'em. Maybe there is still some setting on some shelves!
